Credit: Ysanne Taylor / Gasparilla Music Festival

In 2012, I sat under the awning at Tampa Museum of Art and listened to a determined group of Tampeños share plans to create a music festival that their grandkids could be proud of. That cohort’s ambitions outlived my blog post (RIP Suburban Apologist), but those music-and-Tampa-loving psychopaths have endured.

David Cox, Executive Director at Gasparilla Music Festival, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that he’s always asked board members to have a 10, 20, and 30-year vision for the festival. He looked towards New Orleans Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival as examples, and dared his colleagues to build their own in downtown Tampa.

Standing inside Tampa Heights’ old , now hollowed-out, Flower Crown Kombucha space last Friday, Cox was getting ready to host members of the festival’s “Ring Of Fire” ultra-sustainers—aka folks who’ve believed in the nonprofit festival’s mission since day one.

He recalled his wife being pregnant with their first child before that first festival. “She just turned 14 years old,” he added, alluding to the years that have passed.

And as time has gone on, so has GMF—despite many challenges.

Powered by that board of locals, diehard fans, and a nonprofit vision to enhance music education in Hillsborough County, the festival didn’t even miss a year during the pandemic, opting instead to give music lovers two festivals in one calendar year to make up for lost time.

GMF started to run into bad luck in 2023 when rain forced the cancellation of a headlining set by Run The Jewels, and bumped into more wet weather when it staged a solid, albeit soggy, debut at Tampa’s Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park.

By 2025, GMF was forced to take a year off and lick its wounds.

This weekend, despite a world stacked against independent music festivals, Tampa’s homegrown party is back and ready to welcome fans to its new downtown venue—.

That’s the name Cox made up for the patch of greens pace just north of Water Street Tampa and owned by the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority. Some locals might recognize it because of the old silos left standing after the demolition of Tampa’s Ardent flour mills.

“It just runs right along Meridian Avenue. It just seemed like a good name,” Cox laughed. “We wanted to make sure people knew that there were big fields down there, and it just kind of fell in after a couple weeks of brainstorming different ideas. We sent it out to everybody, and everybody loved it.”

Cox and the team behind the festival hope that fans old and new love the new digs, which are admittedly totally new for locals no matter how long they’ve lived here.

“I kind of like that,” Cox said about the unfamiliarity. “I don’t want that to be a deterrent for somebody going, but we really want people to come and just like experience it and take it in.”

Per usual, the festival has lined up a host of homegrown restaurants to feed the masses—and GMF organizers have done everything to make sure no one has to wait in lines for anything.

Dozens of bands—including national headliners and the best local talent available—will take over the venue for three days, starting Friday, April 10 at 3 p.m. There’s even a free stage at , pop-up music in Water Street, and an after-party featuring Tampa rapper/Freddie Gibbs collaborator Sam E. Hues.

Admittedly, Cox doesn’t know of the Expressway Authority will need Meridian Fields for something else next year—but he’s committed to making the comeback the best it can be.

GMF organizers will regroup after this weekend, and eventually they’ll meet with the landowners who’ll hopefully have some good news. Bands are already hitting the festival up about 2027.

“We’ll have that meeting,” Cox said. “It really is a great piece of property and could really be a jewel for what’s happening in downtown.”

For now, they’re just happy to be firing it up again.

Here are the bands and artists playing Gasparilla Music Festival 2026

In January, GMF unveiled its soundtrack by announcing headliners including indie-rock band Mt. Joy, college party guys Two Friends, and jam-rock icon Gov’t Mule. A month later, organizers announced the addition of other national acts like rowdy Americana songwriter Shakey Graves, EDM crossover star Jai Wolf, and alt-country royalty Drive-By Truckers. The cherry on top was the last-minute welcome back for Afro-Cuban funk wunderkind Cimafunk—who made his Tampa Bay debut at the same festival four years ago.

East Nash Grass, a Tennessee quintet that won the 2024 International Bluegrass Music Association Award for New Artist of the Year, brings its joyful, style-jumping album All God’s Children to the show, too.

“Glee Project” alum-turned pop-rapper Bryce Vine is on the bill along with a hip-hop heavyweight—Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA—who brings his Phunky Nomads band to Gasparilla Music Festival (GMF), too. The Nomads are led by drummer Ramsey Jones, who is the eldest brother of the late Wu-Tang icon Ol’ Dirty Bastards.

Kaitlin Butts (“You Ain’t Gotta Die (To Be Dead To Me)”), a rising country songwriter and vocalist, is also among the touring acts.

As it’s been since the beginning, GMF is anchored by a lineup of the best, and often emergent, homegrown artists.

MiniM—perhaps the most popular Bay area band in the jam scene—is on the bill, along with local indie-rock stars Rohna. Little Giver, an exciting new emo-folk band out of St. Petersburg, makes its GMF debut, too.

Other Bay area highlights include the GMF debut of Tampa’s most-respected emcee Tom G (who’ll presumably link up at some point with his “Cuban Links” collaborator Sam E Hues, who is also on the bill), Daptone-and-Linear Labs-flavored instrumental outfit Soft Cuff, punk quartet Pet Lizard, and elder statesmen of the Americana scene Urbane Cowboys.

Artists from across the Sunshine State are well-represented, too, thanks to young bluesman Josh Gluck, Gainesville art-pop favorite Prizilla, and South Florida indie-pop band Cannibal Kids.

Visit past GMF 2026 coverage from CL to get links to the daily lineup.

Where to park Gasparilla Music Festival 2026

Don’t.

We kid, we kid.

GMF’s new venue is a test of the idea that city slickers shouldn’t have to rely on cars. And with other food & drink and cultral events happening locally this weekend, traffic is set to suck.

While the City of Tampa runs nearby surface lots and parking garages (Pam Iorio, Fort Brooke), there’s a giant rideshare and drop off near the GMF gate on Nebraska Avenue (tell the app to take you to 902 E Whiting St.).

The TECO streetcar trolley—which runs every 15 minutes between Ybor City and downtown Tampa—is also free to ride and has four stops near the festival.

Tampa’s Pirate Water Taxi will also run specials and drop folks off near the free Sparkman Wharf stage. As usual, GMF includes a bicycle valet.

“We’re really trying to get that neighborhood energized around there. We’ve got like 35,000 people that are in like short walking distance to this,” Cox told CL.

Pitch in to help make the Tampa Bay Journalism Project a success.

Subscribe to Creative Loafing newsletters.

Follow us: Google News | NewsBreak | Reddit | Instagram | Facebook | BlueSky

This article appears in Apr. 09 – 15, 2026.

Related

Gasparilla Music Festival has long been a family-friendly tradition with plenty of pop-up entertainment between mainstage acts.
