The Barry University School of Law is facing pressure from Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier to include a Turning Point USA campus chapter, alleging that refusal to do so may violate state law and students’ rights to free expression.<\/p>\n

Uthmeier posted a letter to Barry Law Dean Leticia Diaz on Thursday, which he shared on X, stating the school\u2019s position in support of differing views \u201cmust occur in the context of intellectual humility, empathy and shared purpose, rather than ideological confrontation or partisan activism,\u201d according to coverage on Law.com<\/a>. Turning Point USA is a conservative nonprofit founded by Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated in September and whose platform raised concerns about racism and homophobia.<\/p>\n

Barry is a private Catholic university that has an American Civil Liberties Union club, which supports abortion rights, and an LGBTQ+ student organization, which supports transgenderism. Uthmeier accuses the university of \u201cblatant viewpoint discrimination\u201d and of being in violation of its own guidelines and Florida consumer protection law.<\/p>\n
