LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A long-standing legal battle between the City of Port St. Lucie and its former trash hauler has concluded just days before it was set to go to trial.

A pretrial meeting scheduled for today in St. Lucie County court was bypassed after the city and Waste Pro reached a settlement agreement. The trial, which had been on the docket for years, was scheduled to begin on Monday, April 13.

The dispute originated in September 2021 after the city faced record-breaking complaints from residents over missed collections and inconsistent service. According to the city attorney, the settlement will result in $24 million being paid to Port St. Lucie. The payout will be delivered in three installments, with $21 million due in the next 30 days, followed by $1.5 million scheduled to be paid on January 31, 2027, and a second $1.5 million installment on January 31, 2028.

See also: Legal battle intensifies between Port St. Lucie and WastePro after record complaints

“I think that both sides felt this was in the best interest of both organizations to be able to move forward, and for us, it’s a way for us to help to make sure that the city of Port Saint Lucie residents are getting a good outcome,” said city spokesperson Scott Samples.

The City Council officially approved the motion Friday to accept the settlement terms. The Mayor indicated that city leadership is pleased to put the litigation in the past, noting that he is “happy to come to a resolution” on the matter. The agreement brings an end to a multiple-year case that saw the city challenge the company’s performance and contract compliance during a period of significant service disruptions for local households.

In terms of where this money will go, Samples said that it will be decided at a later date.

Comment with Bubbles

BE THE FIRST TO COMMENT

“At this point, it’s too early to say.
