{"id":226612,"date":"2026-04-10T18:15:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T18:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/226612\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T18:15:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T18:15:06","slug":"band-concert-creates-sensory-friendly-interactive-performance-at-ucf-celebrates-the-arts-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/226612\/","title":{"rendered":"Band concert creates sensory-friendly, interactive performance at UCF Celebrates the Arts | Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"From Inclusive to Exceptional: UCF's band concert creates &quot;sensory-friendly&quot; performance 1\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full default\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>Exceptional Knights&#8217; &#8220;A Day at the Parks,&#8221; one of the events in the\u00a0UCF Celebrates the Arts\u00a0lineup, offered a unique display of music and sound at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday morning.\u00a0The performance offered audience participation and props for a sensory-filled show for the Deaf, hard-of-hearing and neurodivergent communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                                    Cassandra Joseph <\/p>\n<p>Laughter echoed through the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday as children danced during a unique and lively performance by the UCF Concert Band.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cah.ucf.edu\/events\/celebrates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2026 UCF Celebrates the Arts festival<\/a>, the UCF Concert Band performed\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ucfbands.com\/event\/exceptional-knights-concert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A Day at the Parks<\/a>,\u201d an inclusive, sensory-friendly experience for the Deaf, hard of hearing and neurodivergent communities as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/events.ucf.edu\/event\/4086177\/exceptional-knights-part-of-ucf-celebrates-the-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Exceptional Knights<\/a> concert initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Formally known as Inclusive Knights, this year&#8217;s name change offered a \u201cgreater synergy with the university\u2019s track for Exceptional Student Education,\u201d according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/artistryonline.org\/issue\/mar-apr-2026\/ucf-celebrates-the-arts\/#:~:text=Meanwhile%2C%20the%20UCF%20Concert%20Band&#039;s,11%20a.m.%20in%20Steinmetz%20Hall.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artistry Online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it makes everyone feel more positive and inclusive of everybody,\u201d said Ella Peterson, sophomore elementary education major. \u201cEveryone is exceptional in their own way, and it\u2019s a much broader term to be used. I\u2019m happy with the change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexandra Batista, founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stepslearningcenterllc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Steps Learning Center<\/a>\u00a0in Orlando, brought her three children and 13 students from her microschool. Steps Learning Center aims to help\u00a0children with autism, Down syndrome and developmental differences\u00a0be successful in their education, according to its website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like the focus shift on their exceptionalities and that they are just exceptional individuals,\u201d Batista said. \u201cRather than &#8216;We\u2019re doing this and including you guys,&#8217; it just feels more like &#8216;This was for you guys.&#8217;\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UCF Concert Band, directed by Assistant Director of Bands Dave Schreier, was themed \u201cA Day at the Parks,\u201d or theme parks, playing scores from films like \u201cHarry Potter,\u201d \u201cHow to Train your Dragon,\u201d some Broadway selections from \u201cThe Lion King\u201d and other fantasy-like films.<\/p>\n<p>The event was held in the Steinmetz Hall and was open to children and families to be free, to move and talk as necessary, and to accommodate their needs. A sign language interpreter was also present on the left side of the stage for Deaf or hard-of-hearing attendees.<\/p>\n<p>Ellis Hall, senior music composition major, got to experience playing and composing for his first neurodivergent-friendly concert.<\/p>\n<p>Hall said it took about two days to compose his piece \u201cDreamland,\u201d drawing inspiration from Disney\u2019s Epcot theme park and \u201cLa La Land\u201d to evoke the feeling of an imaginary theme park that invites audience participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was low pressure and it was very fun,\u201d Hall said. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize how many people would actually participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The audience was invited to pat their legs and put their arms up to simulate going on a roller coaster. Other songs prompted waving their hands on certain beats, watching colored flags and ribbon dances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Batista said her children particularly enjoyed being handed glowsticks by the performers to mimic the conductor by waving their sticks in the air.
