JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 This week on News4JAX, I\u2019m focused on something that\u2019s become all too familiar\u2014drought. <\/p>\n
Right now, we\u2019re looking at a rain deficit of 20 to 25 inches across our area. <\/p>\n
The Weather Authority\u2019s drought monitor is showing large zones of \u201cextreme to exceptional\u201d drought conditions.<\/p>\n
The risk of brush fires or wildfires is seriously heightened. It doesn\u2019t take much\u2014one loose cigarette or an unattended fire pit could easily spark something dangerous. <\/p>\n
That\u2019s why I\u2019m urging everyone to skip backyard burning, make sure you put out any flames fully, and stay mindful about where you dispose of cigarettes or matches.<\/p>\n
You\u2019re also being advised, in some cases told, to water lawns only once a week and conserve water wherever you can. <\/p>\n
The combination of dry air, lack of rain, and little wind means it\u2019s much easier for flames to start and spread.<\/p>\n
Warm, dry weather pattern ahead<\/p>\n
If we only looked at the thermometer, you\u2019d think it was a perfect week here in Jacksonville. <\/p>\n
Early morning temperatures are sitting in the 50s and 60s\u2014JAX Airport is at 54 degrees, St. Augustine at 60, and Mayport at 64.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, I\u2019m expecting temperatures to soar into the 80s and even 90s during the week.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s the kind of weather that draws people outside and has you thinking, \u201cThat\u2019s why we live in Florida.\u201d But with these beautiful days comes the big caveat\u2014you have to factor in that continued dry spell and the risk that brings.<\/p>\n
Wind gusts are staying low so far, and that\u2019s actually a good thing because stronger winds would make the fire risk even higher.<\/p>\n
Visibility down in some areas<\/p>\n
Many of you are already running into visibility issues during your morning drive. <\/p>\n
Right now, visibility is being impacted in places like Waycross, Macclenny, Starke, and especially Orange Park, where visibility is just about zero. <\/p>\n
If you\u2019re hitting the road early, do yourself a favor and turn on those low beam headlights\u2014they are your best friend in these conditions.<\/p>\n
The reduced visibility is likely to continue while the drought and fire risk stay high. Please drive carefully and watch for changing conditions. <\/p>\n
