A man whose story of survival, faith and resilience touched the Key Biscayne community during one of Israel\u2019s darkest moments will soon visit the island in person.<\/p>\n
Bar Kuperstein, who was taken hostage by Hamas during the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks, is scheduled to visit Key Biscayne next week at the invitation of the Chabad Key Biscayne Jewish Center.<\/p>\n

Chabad Key Biscayne Jewish Center will host Kuperstein at 6 p.m., on Friday, April 17, for a firsthand account of his experience in captivity. The evening is free and open to the entire community.<\/p>\n
Kuperstein had been working as a security guard at the Nova music festival when the attack began. As sirens sounded, he reassured his family he was safe and would return home soon. Instead, he stayed behind to help others escape.<\/p>\n
According to his family and community accounts, Kuperstein and fellow guards helped rescue numerous festivalgoers before he was captured and taken into Gaza.<\/p>\n
For months, there was no information about his condition or whereabouts.<\/p>\n
In August of 2024, his story became personal for many on the Key, when his mother, Julie Kuperstein, made a public request for someone to wear her son\u2019s tefillin in his honor while he was in captivity. A volunteer helped bring the tefillin to Key Biscayne, where dozens of men participated in a day of prayer.<\/p>\n
Participants described the experience of praying with the belongings of a man believed to be held underground in Gaza, to be truly moving.<\/p>\n

That connection only deepened over time. Members of the local community continued to follow his story, including a widely shared moment before Yom Kippur 2025, when his mother responded to a threatening call from a captor by affirming her faith: that her son, and all people, are ultimately \u201cin the hands of the Creator.\u201d<\/p>\n
Just weeks later, after 738 days in captivity, Kuperstein was released.<\/p>\n
Details that have since emerged describe the harsh conditions he endured, held in underground tunnels in extremely confined spaces, with limited communication and basic resources. Despite this, he and fellow hostages maintained religious rituals, including reciting prayers and marking Shabbat together each week.<\/p>\n
Throughout his captivity, Kuperstein reportedly relied on prayer, faith and small acts of purpose to endure.<\/p>\n
Now, months after his return, he will visit the same community that prayed for him during that time.<\/p>\n
\u201cBar\u2019s visit is a full-circle moment for our community,\u201d Rabbi Avremel Caroline said. \u201cWe prayed for him, wore his tefillin and followed his story for over two years. To have him here in person is a special opportunity.<\/p>\n
