His entry adds a former two-term mayor to a field that includes Tampa City Council member <a href=\"https:\/\/tbbwmag.com\/2026\/02\/23\/lynn-hurtak-tampa-mayor-2027\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lynn Hurtak<\/a> and entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/tbbwmag.com\/2026\/03\/27\/gary-hartfield-tampa-mayor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Hartfield<\/a>, who filed earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>His political committee has raised more than $1 million ahead of the filing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTampa\u2019s growth is real, but so are the challenges,\u201d Buckhorn said, citing housing costs, traffic congestion and aging infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Buckhorn\u2019s campaign leans on his record during Tampa\u2019s post-recession recovery, when the city balanced budgets and positioned itself for private investment. Projects including the Tampa Riverwalk and Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park reshaped the downtown waterfront and helped drive development.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tbbwmag.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read the latest Tampa news and updates<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His campaign focuses on extending investment beyond the urban core into neighborhoods that have not fully shared in the city\u2019s expansion.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s office controls city operations, including department <a href=\"https:\/\/tbbwmag.com\/category\/leadership\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"19\" title=\"leadership\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leadership<\/a>, budget execution and capital planning, giving the next mayor significant influence over land use, infrastructure spending and development policy.<\/p>\n<p>Buckhorn said the next phase will require coordination across government, <a href=\"https:\/\/tbbwmag.com\/category\/business-news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"16\" title=\"business\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">business<\/a> and community stakeholders, with a focus on long-term planning as population and economic pressures intensify.<\/p>\n<p>The election is scheduled for March 2027.
