The Jacksonville Jaguars raised eyebrows when they brougth in Liam Coen as their head coach in 2025. While he was coming off a successful season as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he had no prior experience at the position. Couple that with the fact that Coen was blasted for his odd Duuval chant<\/a>, and the Jags caught plenty of heat for his hiring. <\/p>\n

Fast forward to 2026, and Coen is fully vindicated<\/a>, having helped Jacksonville make the playoffs and seize its first AFC South title in three years. And just recently, tight end Brenton Strange revealed what makes him a successful great coach.<\/p>\n

Brenton Strange says Liam Coen knows how to best motivate Jaguars players<\/p>\n

Brenton Strange made an appearance on Good Morning Football and said that he’s excited about his familiarity with the offense<\/a> going into 2026. <\/p>\n

“I think that’s what it was right there. You know what you’re getting into this time. You know what to expect going into practice, going into games, you know how Liam likes to run his system surrounding,” Strange responded when asked what’s different going into Year 2 of the Liam Coen era (1:28 mark). “So that’s what I’m super excited for. It’s just a familiarity, being with everybody. I have the same tight ends coach; we got Grant [Udinski] back, so it’s just going to be good to be back with everybody in the building. I can’t wait to get back to work.”<\/p>\n

During Coen’s first season at the helm, the Jacksonville offense ranked sixth in points scored and 11th in total yards. It’s fair to assume that the Jags will be even better, with lots of continuty carrying over into next season.<\/p>\n

Later in his exchange, Strange stated that Liam Coen has a particular way to get players ready on Game Day. <\/p>\n

“It’s that fire. Man, I see it like weekend and week out he got that fire. He got that competitive juice to him. So I love Liam, man, he makes it easy to go out there and want to work hard and play hard for him. Just, he’ll come up to you and pre-practice sometimes and be like, ‘Yo, somebody said this,’ and that just gets me going. Because I don’t feel like we always get the respect that we deserve, but we just don’t keep taking it and keep working hard,” Strange said.<\/p>\n

Last season, Coen made the news when he got into it with Tennessee Titans head coach Robert Saleh for saying the Jags legally stole opponents’ signals<\/a>. Similarly, he managed to motivate the Jaguars when Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton praised them for being a successful local team<\/a>. <\/p>\n

This is a long-winded way to say that Coen knows what buttons he needs to press to get the most out of his players. <\/p>\n

The Jaguars know Brenton Strange is a pivotal piece on offense<\/p>\n

Early in March, vice president of football operations Tony Boselli said that the Jaguars were working on long-term deals<\/a> for defensive end Travon Walker, wide receiver Parker Washington, and tight end Brenton Strange. The team already took care of Walker, so nobody would bat an eye if Strange is the next in line to get a deal done.<\/p>\n

Sure, Washington is also deserving of an extension, but you could make the case that Strange is more valuable to Jacksonville’s success on offense. After all, they struggled when he missed five games with a hamstring injury. Once the former Penn State Nittany Lion returned to the lineup, the Jags managed to bounce back. <\/p>\n

Of course, the Jaguars would love to have both Parker Washington and Brenton Strange back.
