TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 With the current school year soon coming to an end, the Florida Department of Education has revealed a new course that will soon launch in schools across the state.<\/p>\n

According to a memo released by the FDOE, the course \u2014 an advanced high school U.S. History class \u2014 comes courtesy of a law passed in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More specifically, the law requires the State Board of Education to develop advanced general education courses to help students earn college credits while still attending high school.<\/p>\n

In this case, the memo states that the new history course will provide college credit for any postsecondary civic literacy requirement and the following two general education classes:<\/p>\n

State officials said they will be launching a pilot program for the \u201cFlorida Advanced Course and Test (FACT): U.S. History\u201d course starting in the 2026-2027 academic year at select schools.<\/p>\n

And after the FDOE receives feedback, the course is expected to roll out statewide starting in the 2027-2028 school year, the memo reveals.<\/p>\n

This represents the second \u201cFACT\u201d course to come out of the FDOE so far. Last year, the FDOE also unveiled another new \u201cFACT: College Algebra<\/a>\u201d course for high school students.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the only new class coming to Florida schools this year, though.<\/p>\n

A \u201cHistory of Communism\u201d curriculum<\/a> will also be introduced starting in the 2026-2027 school year, responsible for teaching students about the atrocities committed under communist regimes throughout history.<\/p>\n

The coursework involves instruction on communist movements in places like Russia, China, Cuba, and even in the U.S. itself. <\/p>\n

According to Legislative analysts, instruction must include \u201cage-appropriate\u201d content about the following:<\/p>\n

The history of communism in the U.S. and domestic communist movements<\/p>\n

Atrocities committed in foreign countries under the guidance of communism<\/p>\n

Comparative discussion of political ideologies, such as communism and totalitarianism<\/p>\n

The increasing threat of communism in the U.S. and to its allies<\/p>\n

The economic, industrial, and political events that have preceded communist revolutions<\/p>\n

The communist policies of Cuba and the spread of communist ideologies throughout Latin America<\/p>\n

The subject is slated to be taught as part of a school\u2019s social studies curriculum.<\/p>\n
