What began as a vehicle veering off the road quickly turned fatal when the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the SUV and into the path of oncoming traffic. He was struck by at least two other vehicles and died at the scene.

Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash just before 3 a.m. near the Wilson Boulevard exit. The sequence of events was nothing short of chaotic: the SUV drifted off the highway, cut across the right shoulder, barreled through a grassy area, hit several trees, and then spun back toward the highway before coming to rest on top of a guardrail. That is a lot of ground covered in what was likely a matter of seconds.

The victim has not yet been publicly identified. The drivers of the other vehicles involved stayed at the scene and are cooperating with investigators, which authorities noted in their report. Troopers are still working to determine what caused the SUV to leave the road in the first place, citing “undetermined reasons” at this stage of the investigation.

The crash closed all southbound lanes of I-295 near Wilson Boulevard for roughly six hours before they were eventually reopened. For early morning commuters heading into Jacksonville’s south side, it was a jarring reminder that the highway does not sleep, and neither does the risk of dangerous driving conditions in the middle of the night.

What Investigators Know So Far

Image Credit: New Africa / Shutterstock.

At this point, FHP has confirmed the broad strokes of the crash but has not released the identity of the driver or offered any specific theories about what caused the SUV to leave the roadway. Alcohol, distraction, medical episodes, and road conditions are all possibilities investigators typically examine in crashes like this. The timing of the incident, just before 3 a.m., is a window when drowsy driving and impaired driving are statistically more common, which may factor into the investigation moving forward.

The condition of the road at that hour and whether any mechanical issues played a role have not been addressed in the initial report. As the investigation continues, those details may surface.

The Seat Belt Factor Cannot Be Overlooked

This is the part of the story that deserves its own moment of reflection. The driver was not wearing a seat belt. That single fact almost certainly changed the outcome of this crash entirely.

When the SUV hit the trees and then spun back toward the highway, a buckled driver would have stayed inside the vehicle. Instead, the lack of a seat belt meant the driver was ejected onto the highway, directly into traffic. Being struck by two vehicles while on foot in the middle of an interstate at 3 a.m. is not survivable.

Florida law requires all front-seat occupants to wear seat belts, and back-seat passengers under 18 are also required to be buckled. However, enforcement is reactive, meaning a driver can go years without ever being stopped specifically for not wearing one. That does not make it less dangerous. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration consistently reports that seat belts reduce the risk of death in a crash by around 45 percent for front-seat passengers in cars. In an ejection scenario, that number climbs even higher, since ejection itself is one of the most dangerous outcomes in any collision.

What We Can Learn From This Incident

Crashes like this one, though tragic, carry lessons worth taking seriously. A few things stand out from this particular incident.

First, the time of night matters. Crashes in the hours between midnight and 4 a.m. are disproportionately severe. There is less traffic, which might sound safer, but it also means higher speeds, reduced visibility, and a greater likelihood that a driver may be fatigued or impaired. If you are driving during those hours, extra caution is warranted.

Second, seat belts save lives in ways that are not always visible until something goes wrong. There is no dramatic moment in everyday driving where you feel the seat belt doing its job. That invisibility can make it easy to skip. But the math on ejections is grim, and this crash is a real-world example of what those statistics look like in practice.

Third, the other drivers in this incident did everything right after the crash. They stopped. They stayed. They cooperated. That matters not just legally but for the sake of the investigation and for basic human decency. Hit-and-run crashes are a separate epidemic in Florida, and this was not one of them.

I-295 has seen its share of serious crashes over the years, and the stretch near Wilson Boulevard is a high-traffic corridor that connects several key parts of the Jacksonville metro. Whether this crash leads to any formal review of that section of highway remains to be seen, but the conversation about safety infrastructure, guardrails, lighting, and signage is always worth having after incidents like this.

A Jacksonville man lost his life in the early hours of Monday morning after a violent single-vehicle crash…

[8
618,46635,50951,116,118,117,38258,103499,9644,103498
0":"post-231160","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-jacksonville","8":"tag-florida-highway-patrol","9":"tag-image-credit","10":"tag-impaired-driving","11":"tag-jacksonville","12":"tag-jacksonville-headlines","13":"tag-jacksonville-news","14":"tag-oncoming-traffic","15":"tag-seat-belt","16":"tag-suv","17":"tag-wilson-boulevard
["GET
