I also worked in the Bunche Park cafeteria. It\u2019s beyond me. I\u2019m not understanding. Why now? It\u2019s been over 70 years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The school, named after Ralph J. Bunche \u2014 an American political scientist and the first African American to be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize \u2014 has been a pillar of the Miami Gardens community since its founding in 1952.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"against\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full blur\" width=\"1763\" height=\"1175\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>             <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/69dd5a7a6d669.image.jpg\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"133\" width=\"200\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A resident reads a statement against the renaming of Bunche Park Elementary.<\/p>\n<p>                                    (Elisabeth Campbell for The Miami Times)<\/p>\n<p>During World War II, Bunche served in the U.S. War Department, and in 1947 he joined the permanent United Nations Secretariat in New York as director of the Trusteeship Department.\u00a0A U.S. diplomat and key member of the U.N., Bunche notably helped negotiate an Arab-Israeli truce in Palestine in 1949, which led to his receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1950.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Department of Education held a public meeting last Wednesday following a request received by the school board to rename the school. Francis Ragoo, local resident and member of Miami-Dade\u2019s 21st Century School Bond Advisory Committee, revealed the proffered name\u00a0to be Bunche Park\/Betty T. Ferguson Elementary.<\/p>\n<p>Betty T. Ferguson is a prominent community activist, educator and former county commissioner of 11 years. Ragoo then suggested a withdrawal of the name change request.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, however, the meeting continued, with not one person speaking during public comment in support of the name change.<\/p>\n<p>Bunche Park speaks up<\/p>\n<p>Dozens had turned up for the meeting at the elementary school. Extra chairs were brought out to accommodate the crowd. We\u2019re here to give you a voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When given the opportunity, the community did not hesitate to speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like Bunche Park Elementary is named very aptly after the community of Bunche Park,\u201d said alumna Dianne Wright during public comment. \u201cThere is no need to change the name.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Annette Pettway-Williams is a former teacher who retired from Bunche Park Elementary in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love it here,\u201d said Pettway-Williams. \u201cI have no regrets. I still keep in touch with my parents and my students. I come back to see the teachers and the faculty.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pettway-Williams, like many who attended the public meeting, opposed the renaming. An assistant pastor from First Baptist Church of Bunche Park read a statement attributed to the Rev. Benny L. Everett III.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot appreciate the future without prior acknowledgement and recognition of the past,\u201d Everett wrote. \u201cAs pastor of one of the community\u2019s oldest churches, I must advise we give honor to whom honor is due&#8230; We cannot honor one\u2019s contributions accurately by taking honor away from another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bunche Park resident Paul Roberts put it another way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always claimed I stand on the shoulders of other Black people,\u201d he said, \u201cnot on their heads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concerns over housing costs, limited public transportation, and economic development in Miami Gardens have not escaped the residents of Bunche Park. Near the end of the evening,\u00a0several residents addressed the crowd on behalf of other community issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s really important to work to make this a historic city,\u201d said Brenda Martin Providence, resident and daughter of a former music teacher at Bunche Park. \u201cI love Betty Ferguson like everybody else. Many of you have the time now. Volunteer: to read to a child, help with small group, help with times tables. I\u2019m taking off my hat as a part of the renaming committee, and I\u2019d like to say that these kids need you.
