PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Port St. Lucie<\/a> city leaders are looking to Washington for help as they push forward with plans to build a central downtown area. <\/p>\n

U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner<\/a> visited the city Tuesday to hear a proposal that could bring millions in federal funding to the Treasure Coast.<\/p>\n

The city is requesting that three specific areas be designated as “Opportunity Zones,” a federal status that unlocks funding for infrastructure projects in lower-income communities. While the prospect of major development brings excitement, some residents have expressed concerns that rapid growth could lead to overdevelopment and threaten the city\u2019s unique character.<\/p>\n

These are the three proposed “Opportunity Zones” Port St. Lucie is requesting from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (PSL)<\/p>\n

Secretary Turner explained that the program’s goal is to breathe new life into struggling neighborhoods. Turner noted that the designations are for “areas that literally, for lack of a better term, have been just…faltering or really just been dead and new life is coming in to bring revitalization to these areas, as it pertains to housing, new operating businesses, infrastructure.” <\/p>\n

While the prospect of major development brings excitement, some residents have expressed concerns that rapid growth could lead to overdevelopment and threaten the city\u2019s unique character.<\/p>\n

Turner, however, expressed confidence that the city can maintain its identity even as it grows to accommodate its 260,000 residents. \u201cHere in Port St. Lucie, who’s done such a great job of keeping that hometown feel. I actually said that on our tour, you know, while the city is 260,000 people getting ready to celebrate 65 years in existence, there’s still this hometown, close-knit community feel here, so I’m not concerned at all,\u201d Turner said.<\/p>\n

A primary challenge for the city\u2019s plan is that not every area proposed for the designation currently qualifies under federal law. Specifically, the area at Walton Road and US-1 does not currently meet the necessary income and poverty requirements to become an Opportunity Zone. Despite this, Secretary Turner noted that he is open to exploring an expansion of the program, which could potentially clear the way for that area to receive federal support in the future.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s proposal remains under review as officials look to secure the resources needed to transform the heart of Port St. Lucie into a vibrant urban center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PORT ST.
