This week\u2019s edition of Midweek Cafecito<\/a> was recorded live during a member event at Sweat Records on March 5 (Yep, 305 Day). Hosted by Music Editor Florencia Francechetti<\/a>, the conversation with Sweat Records<\/a> owner Lolo Reskin traced the past, present, and future of viny<\/a>l in Miami, just a few days before Record Store Day.<\/p>\n For Reskin, the significance of record stores goes far beyond retail. \u201cWe are entirely convinced that what we do here is incredibly important,\u201d she said. \u201cWe see that in the faces of the people that come into our store from the youngest to the least young.\u201d<\/p>\n That intergenerational pull is part of what\u2019s fueling vinyl\u2019s continued resurgence. According to Reskin, \u201c2025 was the 19th straight year of growth of vinyl sales,\u201d a streak that reflects both industry momentum and a deeper cultural shift back toward physical formats. New Times recently covered reports that vinyl sales reached $1 billion last year.<\/p>\n The conversation stayed firmly rooted in Miami. From historic shops like Johnny\u2019s Records in Overtown to the city\u2019s legacy as a recording hub \u2014 once dubbed \u201cthe Harlem of the South\u201d \u2014 Reskin emphasized that Miami has long played a pivotal role in shaping music culture. \u201cAny city this big needs to have some good labels to help the talent that\u2019s here go beyond,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n Today, that ecosystem extends from major studios to independent spaces like Sweat, where vinyl functions as both artifact and experience. \u201cWe believe in physical formats\u2026 we love reading liner notes\u2026 the artist really thought about it,\u201d Reskin said, underscoring the tactile appeal that streaming can\u2019t replicate.<\/p>\n That mindset is especially resonant with younger listeners (who were also in attendance at the event). \u201cThey know the artists they love are getting screwed on streaming\u2026 and they really do wanna support the artists,\u201d she added. \u201cSo they come in, and they buy the vinyl.\u201d<\/p>\n As Record Store Day approaches, Reskin\u2019s words highlight the value that Gen Z brings to music culture: \u201cThe future of music is intergenerational\u2026 we\u2019re all gonna be listening to music together\u2026 for a very long time.\u201d<\/p>\n Watch midweek cafecito on YouTube and stream it on Spotify<\/p>\n
