The City of St. Petersburg has named eight businesses as its inaugural Legacy Business honorees, launching a program focused on recognizing companies that have operated locally for more than 20 years and contributed to the city\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n
One business from each City Council district was selected for the 2026 class. The honorees include Parc Center for Disabilities<\/a>, Indulgence Medical Day Spa<\/a>, Red Mesa Restaurant<\/a>, Harvey\u2019s 4th Street Grill<\/a>, Bayway Country Store and Butcher Shop<\/a>, the Morean Arts Center<\/a>, Reed Roofing Company<\/a> and DoMA Home Furnishings<\/a>.<\/p>\n The city will formally recognize the businesses during Small Business Week, scheduled for May 4 through 8. All eligible applicants, including those not selected, will still receive storefront decals and certificates acknowledging their longevity.<\/p>\n The program reflects a shift in how the city approaches economic development. Rather than focusing only on new growth, officials are placing added emphasis on businesses that have remained stable through decades of change. Many of these companies have operated through recessions, redevelopment cycles and evolving consumer habits while maintaining a consistent presence in their neighborhoods.<\/p>\n Each selected business will receive official city signage, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a promotional feature through the city\u2019s BurgBiz platform. The city also plans to highlight the businesses through digital marketing and community outreach to increase visibility and foot traffic.<\/p>\n The support extends beyond recognition. Participating businesses will have access to training sessions and advisory resources focused on succession planning, marketing strategy and lease negotiations. Legal consultation and financial guidance are also part of the program, addressing common challenges faced by long-standing small businesses as ownership transitions and cost pressures emerge.<\/p>\n To qualify, businesses must be independently owned, maintain a physical location within city limits and demonstrate at least 20 years of continuous operation. They must be in good standing with local, state and federal regulations, with no significant legal or financial issues. The criteria are designed to exclude corporate chains and emphasize businesses that operate with local decision-making and direct community ties.<\/p>\n The inaugural group reflects a wide range of industries, from restaurants and retail to arts organizations and service providers. That mix highlights the different ways legacy businesses contribute to the city\u2019s character. Some serve as cultural institutions, while others provide essential services or act as gathering places that define neighborhood identity.<\/p>\n City officials plan to continue the program with nomination cycles expected twice each year. Businesses can nominate themselves or be nominated by members of the public, with final selections determined by city leadership. Nominations that are not selected will remain eligible for future consideration, creating an ongoing pipeline of candidates.<\/p>\n The approach recognizes a reality facing many cities. Long-standing businesses often face rising rents, redevelopment pressure and generational turnover that can threaten their survival. Without intervention, the loss of those businesses can erode the distinct character that differentiates one city from another.<\/p>\n By formalizing recognition and offering targeted support, St. Petersburg is positioning its legacy businesses as long-term assets rather than passive participants in growth.
