{"id":235931,"date":"2026-04-17T18:10:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T18:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/235931\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T18:10:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T18:10:21","slug":"fines-for-ignoring-water-restrictions-in-affected-fla-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/235931\/","title":{"rendered":"Fines for ignoring water restrictions in affected Fla. areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. \u2014 Starting Friday, anyone not complying with water conservation rules set by the Southwest Florida Water Management District could be subject to a fine.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, rules went into effect that require all residents, including those on private wells, to follow one-day-per-week watering restrictions with stricter watering hours. Local governments were giving warnings for the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swfwmd.state.fl.us\/the-newsroom\/2026\/district-declares-modified-phase-iii-water-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">two weeks the restrictions were in effect, but starting April 17 citations will be issued.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater utilities and other\u00a0local enforcement officials must increase their enforcement efforts, including responding to citizen complaints and monitoring water use through patrols or customer records. Starting 14 days after the effective date of the water shortage order, utilities and other\u00a0local enforcement officials are to issue citations first without\u00a0issuing a warning,\u201d a statement reads on the Southwest Florida Water Management District website.<\/p>\n<p>In Pinellas County, <a href=\"https:\/\/pinellas.gov\/watering-schedule-and-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">code enforcement will be issuing $193 citations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fine does increase with each subsequent violation. So please if you do get the warning note or the citation letter\u2026 please do head that,\u201d explained Jeremy Waugh, Director of Utilities for Pinellas County. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to keep coming back out to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waugh says Pinellas County has three full-time employees as part of its water conservation team. On a typical month, their job is to educate residents about the best uses for water. Starting Friday, that team will be out patrolling neighborhoods during on and off watering days to make sure homes are in compliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are required to give citations for the first offense,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we\u2019re trying to get the word out\u2026 please go monitor your watering days. Make sure your irrigation sprinklers are set on for the right days and the right times. We don\u2019t want to give citations, but we\u2019re going to be required by rule to do so starting on Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each city and county has its own set of rules for which addresses are on which watering day.
