I also know how deeply rising costs are affecting families across our state. That is exactly why discussions about property tax reform in Florida deserve serious attention.

But any proposal to significantly reduce or eliminate property taxes must be approached with caution, because for cities like Miami Springs, the consequences could be severe.

Miami Springs is not a large city with endless commercial development or major industrial tax generators. We are a proud, primarily residential community. About 70% of our ad valorem tax revenue comes from homesteaded properties, meaning it comes from the very residents who live here, raise their families here, and depend on city services every day.

Those services are not optional. They include police and fire protection, parks and recreation, senior programming, roadway upkeep, and stormwater infrastructure. These are the core responsibilities of local government, and they are funded in large part through property tax revenue. If that revenue is dramatically reduced without a dependable replacement, the services residents count on will suffer.

There is a common belief that local governments can simply cut spending and absorb the loss. That is not how municipal government works. Cities like Miami Springs already operate carefully and within strict financial limits. We cannot run deficits. We cannot print money. When revenue is reduced, the result is not theoretical. It means fewer services, fewer resources, delayed improvements, and harder choices that directly affect residents.

For Miami Springs, the numbers are clear. When roughly 70% of your tax base comes from homesteaded properties, broad property tax cuts do not just reduce excess. They strike at the heart of your ability to function.

This does not mean tax relief is a bad idea. It means reform must be thoughtful. There is room for targeted relief, especially for seniors, long-time homeowners, and families under real financial pressure. But reform without balance is not relief. It is risk.

We also have to ask an honest question. If property taxes are reduced, but no stable replacement is created, where does the burden go? Does it shift to sales taxes, fees, or other costs that fall on the same residents in different ways? Too often, what appears to be tax relief on paper simply becomes a different kind of financial pressure in practice.

Local governments are the level of government closest to the people. We are the first to hear from residents when something goes wrong, and the first to be held accountable when services decline. That is why decisions made in Tallahassee must reflect the reality on the ground in communities across Florida, especially smaller residential cities like Miami Springs.

Property tax reform should not come at the expense of public safety, neighborhood quality, or the long-term stability of our communities.

As this debate moves forward, state leaders should work closely with local governments to craft solutions that are fiscally responsible, fair, and sustainable. Florida families deserve affordability, but they also deserve safe neighborhoods, reliable services, and strong communities. We cannot protect one by weakening the other.

Connect To Your Customers & Grow Your Business

As a Councilman for the City of Miami Springs, I know how important responsible tax policy is.
