(CBS12)  \u2014 A former Catholic school principal in Pompano Beach was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years of probation after a Broward judge declined prosecutors\u2019 request to send her to prison for stealing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stcoleman.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">St. Coleman Catholic School<\/a>. Lori Ann St. Thomas, 62, also was ordered to pay about $121,000 in restitution. <\/p>\n<p>The sentence came about six weeks <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/former-catholic-school-teacher-convicted-of-fraud-st-coleman-catholic-school-illegal-extra-pay-230000-florida-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">after a Broward jury found St. Thomas guilty of organized scheme to defraud more than $50,000<\/a>, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison under Florida law. Prosecutors had asked for five years in state prison, but Judge Tim Bailey instead imposed probation, saying restitution outweighed the need for incarceration and that St. Thomas was not likely to reoffend. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said St. Thomas improperly arranged more than $238,000 in unauthorized extra pay while serving as principal of St. Coleman Catholic School, where she worked from 2004 until she was fired in 2024. Authorities said the payments were made between 2016 and 2024 and were discovered after school administrators reviewed payroll records.<\/p>\n<p>At trial, the defense argued the money was not stolen and instead reflected approved stipends or compensation for additional work. In the earlier case coverage, Haddad Coleman argued the state failed to prove St. Thomas lacked authorization for the payments and maintained that the evidence did not support the conviction. <\/p>\n<p>The Archdiocese of Miami said after the March verdict that it acted promptly once irregularities were discovered, including cooperating with law enforcement and terminating St. Thomas\u2019 employment. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"POMPANO BEACH, Fla.
