Screenshots via @LauraLoomer\/X<\/a><\/p>\n If you\u2019ve sorted through your mail in Miami recently, you\u2019ve probably come across mailers for the city\u2019s upcoming mayoral race<\/a>. Some have labeled city commissioner Joe Carollo <\/a>\u201cunfit\u201d for mayor, while others have criticized his rival, candidate Emilio Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n A few mailers, however, might\u2019ve made you do a double-take: has President Donald Trump thrown his weight behind Carollo for mayor?<\/p>\n Mailers recently sent from Miami First, Carollo\u2019s political committee, feature several photos of the longtime city commissioner posing, shaking hands with, and even dancing in a ballroom at Mar-a-Lago alongside Trump. There\u2019s a Spanish-language and English-language version of the ad, the latter of which reads: \u201cJOE CAROLLO, More than 25 years with President Trump, defending our Republican principles and values.\u201d<\/p>\n But while the mailers sure might look like an endorsement of some sort from the president, a White House official tells New Times that\u2019s certainly not the case.<\/p>\n \u201cThe President has not endorsed or engaged in this race,\u201d they wrote in an email. <\/p>\n Carollo tells New Times he sent the mailers to local Republican voters in response to his opponent, Gonz\u00e1lez, sending anti-Carollo flyers.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was a mailer so the Republican voters could see both sides,\u201d Carollo said. \u201cThese are pictures throughout many years, [photos] the president has taken with me while being president, way before he was president. I\u2019ve known him for many, many years. I\u2019ve been able to have lunch and dinner with him on business matters before he was president, one-on-one.\u201d<\/p>\n A photo on the mailer, captioned \u201cDancing with the President and First Lady Melania Trump at Mar-a-Lago,\u201d features Carollo and his wife swaying on the dance floor while the Trumps appear to linger in the background (apparently close enough for campaign purposes).<\/p>\n Carollo says he doesn\u2019t believe the mailers imply any sort of endorsement from the president.<\/p>\n \u201cNowhere does [the mailer] say anything about an endorsement,\u201d Carollo says. \u201cCome on.\u201d<\/p>\n Carollo, who previously served as mayor in the late 1990s and has been on the city commission since 2017, officially joined the crowded mayoral race in late September.<\/p>\n He\u2019s running against thirteen candidates, including Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins, former Miami Mayor Xavier Suarez, and former Miami Commissioner Ken Russell. He raked in more than $700,000 in campaign donations this summer and is currently leading the pack<\/a> of mayoral candidates in fundraising.<\/p>\n Carollo recently caught the attention of Florida\u2019s very own far-right provocateur and self-described proud Islamophobe Laura Loomer<\/a>, who deemed Carollo \u201cwoke\u201d and not a true Republican.<\/p>\n Loomer referenced\u00a0an August story about Carollo\u2019s monthly event in Little Havana<\/a>\u00a0featuring performances by a local Cuban drag queen. She included a\u00a0screenshot of\u00a0New Times\u2019\u00a0Facebook post\u00a0<\/a>about the story along with a quote from Carollo noting that the performers \u201care not transvestites.\u201d<\/p>\n
