When I started writing this over a month ago, the Miami Dolphins still had Tua Tagovailoa<\/a> on the roster, and the thought of Malik Willis<\/a> in Miami<\/a> was nothing more than a pipe dream. I was preparing to write this as a coping mechanism for 2026 being Ewers\u2019 year as the starter, and then everything changed.<\/p>\n

Flash forward several weeks later, and the Dolphins have a quarterback that both Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley believe in and a plethora of draft picks to potentially address the position in next week\u2019s NFL draft. I already staked my claim on a quarterback<\/a>, but there are several mid-round guys Miami could take a flyer on.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also the very real possibility they roll the dice with their current quarterback room, which consists of 2025 sixth-round pick Cam Miller<\/a> and 2025 7th-round pick Quinn Ewers. Miami\u2019s brass may have fallen in love with Willis many years ago, but what Ewers did as a rookie should \u2014 at the very least \u2014 give the Dolphins coaching staff something to build on.<\/p>\n

As a rookie, Ewers completed 66.3% of his passes for 622 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, while leading Miami to a 1-2 record as the team\u2019s starter after Tagovailoa was benched for his poor play.<\/p>\n

Was Ewers\u2019 play perfect? Absolutely not.<\/p>\n

He made some poor throws from time to time, and if you\u2019re expecting Tua Tagovailoa\u2019s accuracy, that type of quarterback probably isn\u2019t going to be walking through the door again for a long, long time. (Note: I wrote this before Willis signed, but the point still stands)<\/p>\n

That said, Ewers showed a confidence that can\u2019t be taught in his limited snaps in 2025. And despite not having that #elite accuracy, it certainly shows up from time to time \u2014 most noteworthy being that DIME to Greg Dulcich<\/a> in the middle of the endzone.<\/p>\n

He also has the ability to put some torque on his throws, hitting inbreakers and out routes with what appears to be the flick of a wrist. There are times when he looks like he\u2019s going to be sacked or the play is dead, but he is able to get rid of the ball in a way that Tua simply could not.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, however, the moment never looked too big for Ewers. Maybe that\u2019s to be expected, considering he kept Arch Manning<\/a> on the sideline during his time at Texas, while winning some big games in the process. He wasn\u2019t perfect \u2014 not in college or during his NFL debut \u2014 but he certainly wasn\u2019t terrible. And uncoachable is a word that doesn\u2019t even belong in the same stratosphere as Ewers (His father was a coach).<\/p>\n

Ewers also proved he could start with very little notice.<\/p>\n

No, seriously, the man didn\u2019t even take any first-team reps before he marched out on the field for his first NFL action \u2014 and it never seemed to faze him. That, IMO, is worth investing in, and with so many teams looking for every advantage at the QB position, giving Ewers a chance to compete for that backup spot \u2014 at the very least.<\/p>\n

In the end, the Dolphins found their veteran QB and will hope to find a gem in the draft to develop. I personally like Drew Allar<\/a> \u2014 I always have \u2014 but unfortunately, he\u2019s more of an unknown than even Ewers. And with such an appealing crop of QBs in 2027, that may be the year to land the QB of the future.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s ride with Willis, Ewers, and Miller \u2014 unless the perfect prospect falls into Sully\u2019s lap.<\/p>\n
