Burroughs\u00a0had good reason for dubbing\u00a0John Waters\u00a0the \u201cPope of Trash.\u201d\u00a0The filmmaker may have impeccable personal style, but his contrasting penchant for filth and the forbidden cemented him as the father of cult cinema. Far from resting on his tawdry laurels, Waters is hitting the road with a one-man comedy show that promises to shock, awe and be unapologetically him. Lucky us, he\u2019ll be performing and celebrating his 80th birthday on the same day in Miami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Waters\u2019 fascination with villainy began in his boyhood days in the Baltimore suburbs, holding violent versions of\u00a0Punch and Judy\u00a0puppet shows at birthday parties at age 12. Gleaning inspiration from his surroundings, he and childhood friend\u00a0Divine\u00a0created short films on his front lawn \u2014 the\u00a0\u201cDreamland Lot\u201d\u00a0\u2014 and ultimately drew together a band of misfit suburban kids like\u00a0Mink Stole,\u00a0Mary Vivian Pearce\u00a0and\u00a0Edith Massey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">With the release of 1972\u2019s outrageous\u00a0Pink Flamingos, Waters ushered in an era of underground film, and followed up in the 1970s with\u00a0Female Trouble\u00a0and\u00a0Desperate Living. Even after Waters went mainstream, his movies still retained his trademark tackiness, with\u00a0Polyester,\u00a0Hairspray,\u00a0Cry-Baby\u00a0and\u00a0Serial Mom\u00a0all celebrating downtrodden, unconventional protagonists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Part of this year\u2019s\u00a0Miami Film Festival,\u00a0\u201cGoing to Extremes: A John Waters 80th Birthday Celebration\u201d\u00a0is a high-energy, unfiltered monologue only Waters could conceive and deliver. From right-wing female impersonators and pro-punk conversion therapy to extreme amusement parks and prank guerrilla placement of incendiary bogus book titles (in libraries that recently banned gay children\u2019s classics), Waters is ready to defend humanity at its weirdest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Waters is no stranger to live performance, having previously drawn huge crowds at\u00a0Bonnaroo\u00a0and\u00a0Coachella\u00a0and regularly hosted the Bay Area\u00a0Mosswood Meltdown\u00a0punk rock festival.
