The last couple of years brought a bookstore boom to the Magic City with new shops, new neighborhoods, new concepts, and the options now run the gamut from a bilingual boutique inside Aventura Mall to a one-woman mobile operation that’ll come to you. Here’s where to spend your book budget, your Saturday, and a few good hours.

Chapter and Coast

Miami’s only mobile bookstore launched in February, and it’s already become one of the most exciting things happening in local book culture. The brainchild of a female founder, Chapter and Coast is exactly what it sounds like: a bookshop on wheels that pops up at bars, wine spots, and local events rather than waiting for you to come to it. She’s done nights at Magie Wine Bar and weekends at Rocketeer Beer, and for Independent Bookstore Day itself, she’s back at Rocketeer on April 25 from noon to 6pm. Mitchell Kaplan’s homegrown book institution has been anchoring the city’s literary life since 1982, and the flagship Coral Gables location on Aragon Avenue is still one of the best bookstores in Florida. The Coconut Grove spot on Main Highway has its own fun neighborhood-hangout energy, and both run a serious calendar of author events year-round. What began as a small shop has evolved into one of the city’s most beloved cultural spaces, featuring a community-oriented art bookshop and gallery with over 85 titles. In addition to its extensive book collection, the space offers prints, puzzles, stickers, and unique objects. The store moved to the Miami Design District in early 2024, where it continues to host small press fairs, book signings, and art classes. 50 NE 40th St, Miami Design District

Photograph: James JackmanDale Zine

Steamy Lit

If your bookshelf skews toward enemies-to-lovers and slow burns, Steamy Lit is built for you. Founded by Melissa Saavedra, a Latina entrepreneur and U.S. Navy veteran, this romance-only literary collective is part bookstore, community hub, and celebration of all things love. The company started as a subscription box in 2021, blew up, and now has brick-and-mortar locations in Miami Springs, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa. The Miami Springs spot stocks carefully chosen romance novels alongside merch like candles, totes, and mugs. They run multiple book clubs a month across all locations, plus author meet-and-greets, and even audiobook walking clubs. The 2,000-square-foot shop is deliberately hard to categorize; there are no section signs anywhere, just shelves of fiction, art books, manga, home goods, toys, and games arranged in such a way that you just bump into things. The vibe is colorful and loud, and, given its Miami location, Posman made a point of offering a well-rounded Latin American literature section. 851 NE 1st Ave, Suite D-128, Miami Worldcenter

Quade Books

This bilingual (Spanish and English) shop originated in Argentina and, naturally, chose Miami for its first U.S. location, landing on the top floor of Aventura Mall. The book selection leans toward diverse voices and design-forward titles, with a large Latin American literature section, an extensive kids’ section, and a tight selection of in-demand titles.
