Candidates running for\u00a0Florida A&M University\u2019s\u00a0Queen of\u00a0Orange and Green\u00a0failed to\u00a0secure\u00a0a\u00a0minimum\u00a050 percent of the votes, pushing both races into\u00a0a runoff election.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Candidates\u00a0Neikisha\u00a0Francios and Kareen Dior Williams\u00a0received\u00a041 percent\u00a0and\u00a029 percent of the\u00a0votes,\u00a0respectively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s easier to use percentages rather than just numbers,\u201d 55th\u00a0Senate\u00a0Secretary Rachelle Simmons said. \u201cTypically, the number of students who vote the first time isn\u2019t the same as the second time, so it\u2019s not a consistent number of students.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Queen of Orange and Green\u00a0serves\u00a0as a university ambassador at football games,\u00a0homecoming\u00a0and recruitment events\u00a0a title both candidates are now fighting to claim in a runoff.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Williams\u00a0initially\u00a0campaigned for Miss Freshman when\u00a0she first arrived on campus, but a family death delayed her\u00a0ambitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI just felt like I still had this passion,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cI just wanted to see somebody like me as\u00a0a\u00a0representation\u00a0that it can still happen.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Francios learned about the role\u00a0from former\u00a0Queen of\u00a0Orange and Green Morgan Pinnock, who\u00a0spoke to my\u00a0high school\u00a0class about FAMU.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201c[That]\u00a0experience really encouraged me to attend FAMU and run,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cShe was one of the first people I told when I made the decision.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Both candidates spent the final day of the campaign connecting with students and reaching out to campus organizations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we found out on Tuesday\u00a0\u2026\u00a0\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0in the\u00a0runoff,\u00a0I was just so stressed.\u201d Williams said.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0thinking, oh my gosh,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0going to be over. But no, it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0over.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Candidates were asked how they felt post-campaign and what they had learned through the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n
