CLAY COUNTY, Fla. \u2013 Clay County deputies responding to a welfare check discovered two people dead inside a Fleming Island apartment Saturday, according to the Clay County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
Deputies were called to an apartment complex on County Road 220 after a family member of Ashtin Durham, 34, reached out to authorities about a concerning message they had received from him.<\/p>\n
After several unsuccessful attempts to make contact, deputies entered the home and found Durham and 36-year-old Jessica Valentin-Rivera both dead from apparent gunshot wounds. A firearm and shell casings were recovered from the scene as evidence, according to the Sheriff\u2019s Office <\/p>\n
\u201cInitial indications are that this incident may be a domestic-related murder-suicide, but the investigation is in the early stages and remains ongoing,\u201d the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n
Investigators say both Durham and Valentin-Rivera had children, though none together. The children were not at the home at the time of the shooting and are safe with family members.<\/p>\n
