AVENTURA, Fla. \u2014 The school resource officer at Aventura Waterways K-8 Center is being billed as a hero. <\/p>\n
Miami-Dade Schools Police School Resource Officer Anthony Davila said he treats the kids there as if they were his own. <\/p>\n
It was on March 11 when he put his life-saving skills to the test, saving 13-year-old Alex Senabria from choking. <\/p>\n
Now the two have an inextricable bond. <\/p>\n
\u201cOh, I thought it\u2019s over,\u201d said Senabria. \u201cI was gonna turn blue and fall on the ground. It\u2019s over.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senabria was having lunch at school when he began choking on potato chips, and immediately ran toward the one person he knew could help save his life. <\/p>\n
\u201cI knew this child\u2019s life was in my hands,\u201d said Davila. \u201cI performed back blows, and when that wasn\u2019t working, I switched to the Heimlich.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI knew in that moment I was gonna be OK,\u201d said Senabria. \u201cWhen he was doing the Heimlich.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd luckily he threw the object up and regained breathing,\u201d added Davila. \u201cRight there, I realized that I saved his life. It didn\u2019t kick in until that moment. It could have gone so many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n
And that realization left Senabria with no choice but to throw his arms around the man who saved him. <\/p>\n
\u201cBecause he saved my life and I was very grateful,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause if it wasn\u2019t for him, I wouldn\u2019t be here today.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt melted my heart,\u201d said Davila. \u201cEspecially the hug at the end. It touched right here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now the two are bonding further over their shared love of law enforcement. <\/p>\n
Senabria says he wants to be an officer someday. <\/p>\n
\u201cI just don\u2019t like seeing people do bad things to other people so I wanna send the bad guys to jail,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
Davila was recognized on Wednesday for his life saving actions, a moment he says he\u2019ll remember forever. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis impacted me a whole lot, knowing I saved Alex\u2019s life,\u201d he said. \u201cI see these students as my kids. And I wanna make sure they get home to their parents and families every day safely.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senabria said he already knows the Heimlich maneuver and wants to learn CPR next.<\/p>\n
