PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. \u2014 Pooches in Pines turned an animal abuse tragedy into three stories of hope and recovery. <\/p>\n
Two months ago, Pembroke Pines police officers rescued a trio of puppies. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe conditions were deplorable,\u201d Capt. Adam Feiner said. \u201cThese animals were at or near death.\u201d<\/p>\n
Angela Goodwin, the president of Pooches in Pines, said the case was the worst she had ever seen. <\/p>\n
\u201cJust to the conditions of the dogs, just severely, severely malnourished, covered in feces and urine, just sitting in it, weak, unable to even move around, they were just so weak,\u201d Goodwin said. <\/p>\n
Jaylen Holmes, the animal abuse suspect, faced 12 misdemeanor charges when prosecutors decided to add two felonies after the puppies were assessed. <\/p>\n
The nonprofit trusted Paula and Ramin Kordi with Lana as foster parents — at first. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe just fell in love with her, like the moment that I saw her, she was like a little thing this big, skin and bones,\u201d Paul Kordi said. \u201cShe curled up to me and I was like, \u2018OK this is it!\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n
The couple renamed her Lulu, and she gets along wonderfully with her new 10-year-old sister Stella. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt just broke my heart, it was absolutely horrible,\u201d Paula Kordi said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe someone could do that to these beautiful animals.\u201d<\/p>\n
When Lana arrived, she weighed four pounds. Last checked, Lulu, a ball of puppy energy, weighed a very healthy 15 pounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe walked in here, and she was like, \u2018This is my house now! I live here! You\u2019re not letting me go, lady,\u2019\u201d Paula Kordi said. \u201cThis is it!\u201d <\/p>\n
In Tamarac, Ashley Conon and Catina Moretti, also started as temporary foster parents and decided to adopt Lulu\u2019s sibling, Sasha. <\/p>\n
Conon and Moretti renamed her Luca. At 20 pounds, the puppy, an \u201conly child,\u201d loves to trade treats for tricks and has plenty of space to play.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe looks so much bigger, so much healthier, her coat is much shinier, and she just has a lot more confidence,\u201d Conon said. <\/p>\n
In Fort Lauderdale, Alexa Goldman adopted Peaches and renamed her Ginger. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt was her face, you know, it\u2019s like she got me at \u2018Hello,\u2019\u201d Goldman said. <\/p>\n
The playful Frenchie has three new brothers: Riley, Tanner, and Tito. Goldman said they were \u201cstandoffish\u201d at first, but they love her now. <\/p>\n
\u201cOnce they have that love … and they have their people, they are just like, \u2018Yeah, I can do this … I am ready,\u2019\u201d Goldman said about Ginger\u2019s healing. <\/p>\n
Holmes appeared in Broward County court on Monday as prosecutors move forward with the case. <\/p>\n
