Authorities said it led to the man\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That patient\u2019s grieving widow spoke to Local 10\u2019s Jeff Derderian, saying she hopes that doctor never treats another patient again. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Beverly and Bill Bryan, of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, had been married for 33 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But the two kept a rental place in Miramar Beach \u2015 in Florida\u2019s Panhandle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">One day, a trip to the hospital revealed that Bill Bryan, 70, needed surgery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Beverly Bryan said Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky performed that surgery, but something went terribly wrong. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A deadly mistake, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prosecutors say Shaknovsky, 44, removed her husband\u2019s liver instead of his spleen by accident, which led to complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHis spleen was completely intact,\u201d said Beverly Bryan. \u201cHe had a small cyst that ruptured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She said afterward, Shaknovsky held her hand, prayed with her and then lied about what happened. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe offered his condolences, said Bill was in a better place and the Lord would take care of him,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Beverly Bryan said her husband wanted to go back to Alabama for the surgery, but she said the doctor insisted, pressing and urging them to do it now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She recalled her last words to her husband.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI told him that I loved him and he said he loved me,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Records show Shaknovsky\u2019s Florida medical license is not currently active.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to a lawsuit, Shaknovsky said that in the chaos and shock of that operating room, he could not identify the organ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He now faces a second-degree manslaughter charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cNo surgeon that we\u2019ve talked to can make sense of what he did,\u201d said Bryan\u2019s attorney Joe Zarzaur. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t make sense, because no one in the trained field can make sense of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Beverly Bryan said her husband was literally hours away from being cremated when the medical-mistake was brought to her attention, otherwise she may have never had known. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">When asked if the doctor has ever apologized, Bryan didn\u2019t hesitate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cNot once,\u201d she said. \u201cNot a word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udfe0 News From Your Neighborhood<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-article-body__copyright\">Copyright 2026 by WPLG Local10.com &#8211; All rights reserved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. \u2014 A Florida doctor was indicted by a grand jury last week after allegedly removing&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":239820,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[249,251,250],"class_list":["post-239819","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fort-lauderdale","tag-fort-lauderdale","tag-fort-lauderdale-headlines","tag-fort-lauderdale-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/239819","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=239819"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/239819\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/239820"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=239819"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=239819"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=239819"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
