The short answer is that Universal describes the technology as a photo-based identity verification system designed to streamline entry at select locations.<\/p>\n
According to Universal Orlando\u2019s official \u201cEffortless Entry\u201d information page<\/a>, guests can scan their ticket, take a photo, and then use that image for faster future entry by matching the guest to the ticket on subsequent visits or checkpoints.<\/p>\n The system is intended to reduce repeated ticket scanning and help guests move through entry points more quickly. Personally, I have used the system multiple times, along with my family, and it does work incredibly fast.<\/p>\n The system has been in place for about three years; testing began<\/a> in late 2023.<\/p>\n Universal Orlando Photo Validation information<\/p>\n Is it facial recognition?<\/p>\n Many guests may refer to the process as facial recognition because it involves using a guest\u2019s face to verify identity. However, Universal publicly refers to the system as Photo Validation rather than facial recognition.<\/p>\n That distinction is meant to emphasize how the technology functions and how data is processed.<\/p>\n Where is it being used?<\/p>\n Universal has promoted the system for use at select park entry locations and attractions.<\/p>\n Attractions Magazine has also observed additional testing at King\u2019s Cross Station<\/a> of the Hogwarts Express attraction, where new kiosks were recently installed. One kiosk was actively using photo validation while another continued standard ticket scanning. The Express entrance was also utilizing the updated system.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve also observed it used as other Harry Potter attractions like \u2018Escape from Gringotts<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n Most notably, there have been temporary photo validation stations<\/a> seen at Dark Universe inside Epic Universe theme park. <\/p>\n Can guests still use standard ticket scanning?<\/p>\n Based on current testing, yes. Traditional ticket scanning remains in use alongside the newer system in some locations.<\/p>\n That suggests Universal may be using a phased rollout while maintaining alternative entry options.<\/p>\n If I opt out of Photo Validation, what happens?<\/p>\n Universal Orlando states that if you decide to opt out of Photo Validation, you will continue to enter the park using the same lanes as guests who do use Photo Validation. Same with Universal Express Pass.<\/p>\n Adults who opt out of Photo Validation will also be asked to present a valid photo ID to verify their ticket and\/or Universal Express Pass.<\/p>\n Why Universal is doing this<\/p>\n Theme parks across the industry continue looking for ways to reduce friction, shorten lines, and improve throughput. A system that verifies guests more quickly usually helps with park entry gates, attraction entrances, Express Pass checkpoints, and future high-capacity parks like Epic Universe.<\/p>\n Final thoughts<\/p>\n While many guests may casually call it facial recognition, Universal Orlando is branding the program as Photo Validation.
