According to investigators, the incident began when Thalia Flores called animal control, asking how to cremate dogs. “A female by the name of Thalia Flores called then asking how to cremate dogs,” Major Michael Santiago said. When officers arrived at the home, they found five black bins outside. “In each of those bins, there was a dead dog. But what was unique, they were covered in blankets, and they had flowers on them as if they were coffins,” Santiago said. Inside the home, officers found about a dozen cats and two dogs alive, along with another injured dog in the backyard. Investigators said the condition of the home, the animals, and the evidence at the scene led to Flores being arrested on six counts of animal cruelty. “The house was in disarray. There was a very, very strong odor emanating from the house the moment that the officers opened the door. You smell the feces, you smell the urine inside the house,” Santiago said. The owner of the home, Georgina Padilla, expressed shock over the situation. “I was really shocked because I didn’t even really know what was going on, you know. I didn’t know that they had that kind of animals,” Padilla said. Police also charged a 20-year-old man with obstructing the investigation after he reportedly removed the injured dog from the backyard to hide it from officers. The dead dogs appeared malnourished, and investigators are still working to determine what led to the situation. “Was she in fact purposely doing this? Was it that the animals became so plentiful she wasn’t able to care for them?” Santiago said. The major at the Fort Pierce Police Department described the incident as tragic. “I’m speechless. You see these dogs, they’re malnourished and they’re suffering from dehydration. I can only imagine what they suffered, and that right there is unacceptable,” Santiago said. Police said the investigation remains active as they work to determine how the dogs died.

      FORT PIERCE, Fla. —

Fort Pierce police are investigating a case of animal cruelty after dead dogs were found in bins outside a home on Georgia Avenue and other animals were discovered alive inside.
