Investigators said three people were shot. One victim, identified as Daesean Anthony Moctezuma, 18, of Clermont, died at the hospital. The other two victims, including another 18-year-old and a 16-year-old, were also taken for treatment and are expected to survive. Authorities said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident. The shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents tied to large, unauthorized house parties at short-term rentals in Osceola County.Captain Kim Montes with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office says these events are often organized online and draw large crowds of young people into residential neighborhoods, sometimes using entry systems such as QR codes or fees for access. Montes said deputies have responded to numerous similar gatherings in recent months.”These house parties are not only illegal, they are a nuisance to these communities, and they are also dangerous,” Montes said.Investigators say the parties often escalate quickly when alcohol, large crowds and disputes mix.”This is the second murder that we had in less than 6 weeks from a house party,” Montes said.Deputies said many attendees travel from outside Osceola County, including Orange and Lake counties, to attend these house parties.”They get a QR code, and that gets them access into a lot of these places that are gated communities, and when they get there, they are paying some kind of fee,” Montes said.Authorities said some of the properties are rented through short-term rental platforms, such as Vrbo, and then turned into large, unregulated gatherings.”Someone typically rents one of these Vrbos from out of the area, fairly cheap and then they have this house party, and they bring in hundreds of kids,” Montes said.Investigators said the scene in this weekend’s shooting was chaotic, with 911 calls reporting people hiding during the gunfire.”We actually got a 911 call that people were hiding in the closet,” Montes said.Deputies said they believe the shooting happened outside the home, but a camera on the property was obstructed, limiting visual evidence.”We do believe this shooting happened in the front yard,” Montes said. The sheriff’s office said it will continue weekend enforcement operations targeting illegal house parties.”We will be going out on weekends from here on out and until near future to make sure these parties don’t continue,” Montes said.Officials said they have documented more than 600 violent crimes in the past year connected to illegal house parties in Osceola County. In a similar case six weeks ago, a 17-year-old was shot and killed at a large house party at a short-term rental in Kissimmee. Investigators said more than 100 people attended that gathering. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to report large, unpermitted gatherings and to come forward with any information related to this weekend’s shooting.
