{"id":241003,"date":"2026-04-21T22:28:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T22:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/241003\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T22:28:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T22:28:07","slug":"fort-lauderdale-commissioners-discuss-268-million-proposal-for-new-city-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/241003\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Lauderdale commissioners discuss $268 million proposal for new city hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text text--small text--normal text--primary\">Published:\u00a0April 21, 2026 at 6:04 PM<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.  \u2014 Fort Lauderdale\u2019s old city hall was badly damaged by flooding in 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On Tuesday, commissioners will vote on whether to sign an interim agreement with the developer behind their proposed new building. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That developer came up with a futuristic design, and it comes with a hefty price tag. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The big question for city leaders is whether to spend $268 million on a new construction or spend less on an older existing building in the city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Commissioner Ben Sorenson told Local 10\u2019s Aaron Maybin the new building will cost tax payers $24 million a year, adding up to around $724 million over the next three decades. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He wanted to delay Tuesday\u2019s vote to find other options. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Commissioner Steven Glassman, meanwhile, said he supports building a new city hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe choice tonight is really whether or not we are going to move forward with something that meets our needs, and we have them really buttoned down,\u201d said Glassman. \u201cOr are we just going to go into the future and guess what those costs are going to be. I\u2019m not one to guess on what the future might bring us on this structure.
