{"id":241085,"date":"2026-04-21T23:46:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T23:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/241085\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T23:46:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T23:46:06","slug":"coral-gables-voters-cast-ballots-on-8-referendums","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/241085\/","title":{"rendered":"Coral Gables voters cast ballots on 8 referendums"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">CORAL GABLES, Fla.  \u2014 On Tuesday, the city of Coral Gables held a special election for several referendums. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The first referendum was regarding whether to move the city\u2019s elections \u201cfrom April in each odd year to the date of the national election in November of each even year commencing in 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It was passed with the \u201cyes\u201d option receiving 66% of ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The second referendum was to amend the city charter and \u201cprohibit changing the City\u2019s municipal general election date away from November of even-numbered years through the adoption of an ordinance by the City Commission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It was passed with the \u201cyes\u201d option receiving 62% of ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The third referendum asked voters whether city commissioners or appointed officials \u201cwho appointed a member to a City board or committee\u201d have the ability \u201cto remove that member from that position prior to the expiration of their term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It did not pass, with the \u201cno\u201d option receiving 60% of ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The fourth referendum passing would require commissioners to convene a \u201cCharter Review Committee\u201d every 10 years, beginning in 2035, to review the city charter and \u201cprovide recommendations on potential amendments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It was passed with the \u201cyes\u201d option receiving 66% of ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The fifth referendum asked voters whether the city should contract an inspector general to provide services as needed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It was passed with the \u201cyes\u201d option receiving 68% of ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The sixth referendum was regarding changes to the compensation of elected officials in the city, and whether a vote would be needed to adopt any potential changes \u201cbeyond the annual adjustment to compensation based on the Consumer Price Index.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It was passed with the \u201cyes\u201d option receiving 77% of ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The seventh referendum asked voters whether the city should eliminate runoff elections in races for city commission or mayor, and simply name the winner based on who receives the most votes, not requiring at least 50% plus one of the ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It did not pass, with the \u201cno\u201d option receiving 66% of ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The eighth referendum was regarding the city maintaining a \u201cGeneral Fund Reserve\u201d that would be \u201c25% of the city\u2019s operating budget and that a four-fifths vote from commissioners\u201d would be required to \u201camend the fund reserve policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It was passed with the \u201cyes\u201d option receiving 63% of ballots cast. <\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udfe0 News From Your Neighborhood<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-article-body__copyright\">Copyright 2026 by WPLG Local10.com &#8211;
