When you\u2019re rung up at the register and pay with cash, if your total ends in 1 or 2 cents, they\u2019ll round down to zero, and 3 or 4 cents will get rounded up to five.<\/p>\n
Florida\u2019s change would mostly affect businesses like convenience stores that often deal in cash.<\/p>\n
Mario, a cashier at a Shell gas station in Hollywood, says he only sees maybe a few pennies an entire day; it\u2019s pretty rare, so he\u2019s not surprised.<\/p>\n
\u201cLots of people don\u2019t have pennies,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I give back the pennies, they leave it here for some other customer who need it. No there\u2019s no more pennies anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
A customer who said he understands the change, gave his two cents on the matter. <\/p>\n
\u201cI got the silver pennies, I got the wheat pennies, regular pennies, and Indian heads,\u201d said customer Dara. \u201cI kinda saw it coming. Things are getting more expensive and pennies are gonna be useless soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last year, the U.S. Mint officially stopped making new pennies because they cost more to make than they\u2019re worth at this point.<\/p>\n
Albert Williams is an economics professor at Nova Southeastern University\u2019s Huizenga School of Business. <\/p>\n
He said it costs almost 4 cents to make a single penny.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re gonna make transactions a little bit easier I think,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s kinda a no-brainer. Why would you want to make something that\u2019s worth one penny that\u2019s costing nearly four pennies to make?\u201d<\/p>\n
