Miami residents are already familiar with the impact Overtown has made on the city. Now, world travelers have a chance to learn about the neighborhood\u2019s history and culture as well.<\/p>\n
Telling Overtown Stories, Saying Their Names, a multi-media series of large-scale murals and interactive displays, is currently enlightening visitors to Miami International Airport. It is being presented through a partnership with the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (Miami MoCAAD).\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cShowcasing this impressive exhibition at MIA during the same months as our FIFA World Cup matches and the Miami-Dade 250 events\u00a0offers a unique opportunity to share Overtown\u2019s story with visitors from around the globe,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava at the exhibit\u2019s recent unveiling.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe exhibition embodies the power of merging art and technology to ensure that stories once overlooked are never forgotten,\u201d said Marilyn Holifield, senior partner\u00a0at\u00a0Holland & Knight LLP and Miami MoCAAD co-founder.\u00a0\u201cThe exhibition culminates nearly a decade of vision, collaboration, and innovation,\u00a0creating\u00a0new ways to experience art and\u00a0to\u00a0make\u00a0it accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShaped by the influences of the Bahamas, Haiti, Jamaica, and beyond, Overtown embodies the spirit and cultural depth that define Miami itself,\u201d Holyfield added.<\/p>\n
The unveiling, attended by government officials, cultural advocates and community members, also featured remarks from\u00a0MIA Director and CEO Ralph Cuti\u00e9 and\u00a0Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado, who suggested displaying the murals at the airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The exhibition features vinyl replicas of three permanent murals by Black artists located at historic Overtown landmarks. OVERtown:\u00a0Our Family Tree,\u00a0by Anthony \u201cMojo\u201d Reed II, is originally at the law office building constructed and owned by Judge Lawson E. Thomas; Reginald O\u2019Neal\u2019s\u00a0International Longshoreman Association Local 1416, is located at the Local 1416 Union Hall; and Stefan Smith\u2019s\u00a0Overtown Pitch: Game Changers\u00a0can be found at the historic Carver Hotel site.\u00a0<\/p>\n
These murals\u2019 replicas can now be seenat MIA\u2019s Connecting Communities Wall near Door 11 on the arrivals level of Concourse E, pre-security. It will be on display until\u00a0Oct. 13, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n
