Florida State University faculty are rethinking how students learn. At the university\u2019s third annual Provost\u2019s Showcase of Scholarly Teaching, educators across campus gathered and highlighted innovative approaches across a range of disciplines that unite research and creativity to craft learning experiences that help students develop the skills they need in their fields. From virtual reality simulations and AI-driven coursework to hands-on activities and authentic connection, faculty are using\u00a0cutting-edge\u00a0strategies to keep students engaged and learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The event, hosted by the\u00a0Center for the Advancement of Teaching<\/a>\u00a0(CAT)\u00a0in collaboration\u00a0with\u00a0FSU Libraries<\/a>,\u00a0highlighted\u00a0new approaches\u00a0to student-centered teaching and learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n The 2026 showcase\u00a0featured\u00a031 poster presentations and 18 roundtable discussions,\u00a0focusing on student success and new ways to enhance both classroom and online learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI recognize from my own experience as a researcher just how many hours it takes to put together such\u00a0high-quality\u00a0work\u201d said FSU Provost\u00a0Jim Clark.\u00a0\u201cIt is exciting to think that our students are benefiting so much from the type of intelligence you are bringing to this work. (Casey McCarthy\/Florida State University)<\/p>\n The showcase\u00a0opened\u00a0with\u00a0remarks from\u00a0Vice President for Student Academic Success\u00a0Joe O\u2019Shea,\u00a0who highlighted\u00a0the work\u00a0faculty and staff\u00a0are doing\u00a0to\u00a0improve\u00a0student learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cAs ambassadors of teaching excellence, you\u2019re helping to lead the way for FSU,\u201d O\u2019Shea said. \u201cI have so much appreciation for the engaging class experiences you create \u2014 the dedication to designing powerful learning experiences that stretch and empower students to grow to their full potential.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Through poster presentations\u00a0faculty and staff\u00a0shared\u00a0findings and\u00a0innovations such as gamifying persuasion through Dungeons & Dragons, using virtual reality in social work education and navigating the use of artificial intelligence in introductory programming and STEM courses.\u00a0The showcase\u00a0also gave faculty\u00a0a space\u00a0to\u00a0exchange ideas\u00a0and\u00a0learn\u00a0from\u00a0colleagues across disciplines.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n FSU faculty share their presentation with Vice President for Student Academic Success Joe O\u2019Shea. (Casey McCarthy\/Florida State University)<\/p>\n Julie Baisden, assistant clinical professor at the Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences,\u00a0highlighted the significance of sharing the research she co-presented with doctoral student Peter Marti.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cSharing our research in spaces like this allows us to brainstorm next steps with our peers,\u201d Baisden\u00a0said. \u201cSince everyone brings a different perspective to the table, it\u2019s been incredibly helpful to bounce these new ideas off one another.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Roundtable sessions throughout\u00a0gave\u00a0faculty\u00a0and staff\u00a0a chance\u00a0to share current initiatives and receive\u00a0peer\u00a0feedback.\u00a0The discussions addressed subjects like\u00a0optimizing\u00a0continuous student feedback to integrating AI in the classroom.\u00a0\u00a0Rotating sessions allowed participants to explore challenges and share solutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Rotating roundtable sessions allowed faculty and staff to explore common challenges and share solutions. (Casey McCarthy\/Florida State University)The presentations offered a platform for educators to exchange ideas, ignite inspiration and connect with colleagues. (Casey McCarthy\/Florida State University)<\/p>\n \u201cRather than simply teaching the way they were taught,\u00a0FSU\u00a0faculty are\u00a0applying\u00a0research\u00a0and\u00a0designing\u00a0learning experiences that are much more effective,\u201d said\u00a0Leslie Richardson, director of the\u00a0CAT.\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re\u00a0testing out\u00a0new ideas\u00a0and receiving feedback from one another, creating a cross-campus network that allows them to learn from each other\u2019s innovations rather than working alone. It\u2019s an opportunity for those doing amazing things to get their work out there and share it with colleagues so that more people can learn to do the\u00a0same.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Faculty and teaching assistants interested in presenting next year are encouraged to email\u00a0pro-teaching@fsu.edu<\/a>\u00a0to discuss ideas or seek guidance on the application process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
