If you work for hedge fund Citadel, there are certain advantages to being based in Miami.<\/a> Ken Griffin lives there and he is spending $2.5bn building<\/a> a 54 storey new Citadel headquarters in the southern city. Taxes are low, temperatures are high and the beach is near.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So far, though, Citadel’s US investment staff seem to be hanging out elsewhere. They are mostly in New York City instead.<\/p>\n

Citadel’s recently filed annual ADV form for 2025 highlights this state of affairs. The fund now employs 576 investment professionals in New York City. In Miami, it employs just 21.<\/p>\n

Nor has Miami’s quotient of Citadel investment professionals risen in the past year as Chicago’s has fallen. Measured in these terms, Miami does not appear to have benefited from Chicago’s recent shrivelling, although Chicago staff are thought to have moved in the past.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Investment professionals include both analysts and portfolio managers. In combination, Citadel and Citadel Securities employ nearly 400 people in Miami. To the extent that these people are working for the hedge fund rather than for the market maker, they are presumably in technology and other support roles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Things might change when the 54 storey new Miami office is completed in six years time. For the moment, thought, portfolio managers appear to prefer to the facilities at 660 Park Avenue.<\/p>\n

Outside of New York, the ADV filing is a reminder that Citadel’s second biggest investment office is in London, where staff numbers dwarf the Miami-sized office in Paris. It’s also a reminder that Citadel’s second biggest European office is now in Hamburg, where the firm inherited staff after it bought power trader FlexPower last October.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Citadel declined to comment.<\/p>\n
