Concertgoers arriving for the North American kickoff of the “Arirang” tour were greeted by welcome signs, employees decked out in BTS’s signature color, purple, a balloon arch set up for photos, and a performance by the Progress Village Middle Magnet School Majorette Team to some of the group’s hits.

“I came to see that, too, to see if it was real. I was seeing it on social media,” Lee said, pointing to an area set up for photos. “This is incredible. I cannot believe a Korean band is doing this in Tampa, of all places. It’s not Atlanta. They picked Tampa to come to – that’s great.”

TPA Communications Manager Beau Zimmer said the airport does add special touches to welcome fans of big events but rarely does something on this scale. He said the welcome fit for an ARMY, the name given to BTS’s fan base, is due in large part to local fans. According to Zimmer, they began reaching out months in advance, wanting to do something to greet those who are traveling from around the country – and the world – to see the shows. Members of the ARMY group Tampa Bangtan Besties said they’d already greeted people from South Korea, Australia, Germany, and more.

Nearby, the city closed the section of Tampa Bay Blvd. in front of the stadium for merchandise sales that are set to begin Thursday. Preparations were even underway miles from the venue in Temple Terrace.

“Insane. I think this is going to be the craziest week we’ve experienced so far,” said Ritu Varde, co-owner of Soundbloom K-pop.

The nearly two-year-old store founded by Varde and co-owner Lisa Ha aims to create access to albums, exclusive merchandise, and items K-pop lovers might otherwise only be able to get abroad. Varde said it’s also about creating community. After discovering BTS in college ten years ago, that community is what Ha said caused her to become an even bigger fan in 2022.

“It’s just super fun to meet new people and connect, and it really pulled me in deep,” Ha said.

Thursday marks the start of a week of promotions and special events at Soundbloom to celebrate BTS in Tampa Bay. Ha and Varde said they got a taste of the economic boost the band brings when one of its members, Jin, performed in Tampa last year.

K-pop boy band sensation BTS will be performing multiple nights at Raymond James Stadium, but before the concerts get underway, there will be a road closure. Not only is Tampa the tour’s North American kick-off, it’s the only scheduled date for the southeast U.S. Ha said there could be a few reasons for that, including Raymond James itself as a venue and the warm reception she said Jin’s shows were met with.

“I think this corner of the country doesn’t really have that many K-pop stores in general, that many concerts. So, it is kind of underserved in K-pop in that aspect,” she said.

“I was kind of shocked. I was like, ‘Tampa?'” said Soundbloom customer and BTS fan Jules Mull of learning the group would be performing in her backyard. “That was awesome, though. I kind of thought we’d have to go to Miami to see them.”

Mull said she’s going to Sunday’s show with her wife, who introduced her to the band.

“The energy, and the fun, and the fact that they care about their fans – especially my generation, the older generation. It seems like they really give us attention,” said Mull, 56, about what drew her to BTS.

As for Lee, he said it’s his wife that’s ARMY – not him. He said that won’t damper his spirits when they’re in the crowd at Raymond James on Sunday.

“Although I am the most hesitant to go, I’m going to have the most fun,” he said. “Any kind of music, any kind of dancing…I love it.”

Lee said one reason BTS’s popularity is special is the representation it offers members of the Korean community, like his family.

“I keep telling him how easy it is just in life because he has BTS and other Korean groups,” Lee said, referring to his son. “It was hard for us, especially here in Tampa, in the south. But, yes – definitely a sense of pride.”

BTS’s first Tampa show is scheduled to get underway at 8 p.m. Saturday.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Thousands of K-pop fans are descending on Tampa ahead of this weekend’s BTS concerts.…

[10
274,558,104,28,276,115,139,2718,135,137,136,278,835
0":"post-243151","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-tampa","8":"tag-app-top-stories","9":"tag-business","10":"tag-entertainment","11":"tag-florida","12":"tag-hillsborough-county","13":"tag-news","14":"tag-orlando","15":"tag-sarah-blazonis","16":"tag-tampa","17":"tag-tampa-headlines","18":"tag-tampa-news","19":"tag-top-stories","20":"tag-vod
["GET
