Wounded St. Cloud veteran Craig Messina (U.S. Navy, Ret.) will receive a new all-terrain\u00a0trackchair\u00a0from The Independence Fund\u00a0during the Florida Gulf Coast University baseball game on\u00a0Saturday, April 25.\u00a0The\u00a0trackchair\u00a0will be presented in partnership with Kappa Alpha Order\u2019s Zeta Phi Chapter.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Since 2016, Kappa Alpha chapters nationwide have raised more than $1.4 million to provide veterans with mobility devices, including all-terrain\u00a0trackchairs, through The Independence Fund\u2019s Mobility Program.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Messina served six years in the U.S. Navy before his military career ended due to a service-related hip injury and an on-base vehicle accident. He sustained herniated discs, permanent nerve damage, and\u00a0required hip replacements, and he will need spinal fusions. Prolonged standing and walking are extremely painful and significantly limit his mobility.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cA\u00a0trackchair\u00a0would change my life, allowing me to do things I wouldn\u2019t normally be able to do,\u201d said Messina. \u201cI would be able to take walks with my wife, walk the dogs for longer than five minutes, and go to the golf course and shooting range with my kids.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
