According to Davie police, the group used a master U.S. Postal Service key and a coordinated plan to target mailboxes at the Shalimar Apartment Complex off South University Road. <\/p>\n
Investigators say the suspects unlocked and emptied mailboxes, stuffing stolen mail into large garbage bags before leaving.<\/p>\n
Residents believe the thefts began late last year and escalated during the holidays and peak tax season.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s very crazy. I didn\u2019t think something like that actually happened,\u201d said victim Aja Angus.<\/p>\n
Angus said she realized she had been affected after ordering a credit card that never arrived.<\/p>\n
\u201cI ordered a credit card and I realized someone took that credit card and tried to use it at one of the AT&T\u2019s down the street. Then when I heard, I was like, \u2018oh, that\u2019s probably what happened,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Other neighbors said they noticed large amounts of missing mail, even if they weren\u2019t personally targeted.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey didn\u2019t steal any of my mail personally, but they took a lot of people\u2019s mail,\u201d Berry said.<\/p>\n
Police say surveillance footage helped investigators identify patterns and develop leads. On April 7, authorities say the suspects returned to the mail room — and officers were ready.<\/p>\n
When police moved in, investigators say the suspects tried to flee. The driver of the getaway car hit an exit gate before crashing into a Davie police patrol vehicle.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo see that I was actually affected by it, as well, I was like, \u2018that\u2019s an insane thing to happen,\u2019\u201d Angus said.<\/p>\n
Police say the stolen mail from that incident was recovered. It remains unclear how the suspects obtained the master key.<\/p>\n
With the arrests, neighbors say they finally have some peace of mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m glad. I\u2019m happy,\u201d Angus said. \u201cI work hard, and for things like that to happen, it sucks.\u201d<\/p>\n
