Firefighters pulled an unconscious woman from a first-floor apartment after a kitchen fire in Fort Lauderdale on Friday afternoon, according to neighbors and emergency responders. Paramedics rushed her to a nearby hospital, and crews also rescued two cats from the unit.<\/p>\n

Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue units responded to reports of smoke and flames in the 800 block of Northeast 18th Avenue, where they found heavy smoke pouring from a first-floor apartment. Neighbors Sound Alarm as Crews Work to Revive Victim<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did a really good job with resuscitation,\u201d Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Tim Heiser said, praising the crew for the rescue effort. Neighbor Brianna Oliveira told WSVN<\/a> she was outside when she smelled smoke, ran to warn the woman, and later learned that the victim\u2019s two cats had been saved. Heiser added that crews administered medicine on scene to help remove cyanide from the victim\u2019s blood and that she was more alert by the time she reached the rescue unit.<\/p>\n

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and Fort Lauderdale officials have not released further details about the victim\u2019s condition.
