{"id":246586,"date":"2026-04-25T20:47:38","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T20:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/246586\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T20:47:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T20:47:38","slug":"missys-law-passes-florida-senate-to-become-law-after-governors-signature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/246586\/","title":{"rendered":"Missy\u2019s Law passes Florida Senate, to become law after governor&#8217;s signature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtxl.com\/news\/local-news\/missys-law-filed-to-become-law-following-death-of-5-year-old-melissa-missy-mogle-in-tallahassee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMissy\u2019s Law,\u201d<\/a> also known as <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/445\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HB 445<\/a>, officially passed through the Florida Senate on Wednesday, March 4th, with a<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=83039\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> unanimous vote.<\/a> It had previously passed the House last week.<\/p>\n<p>The bill requires anyone convicted or who pleads guilty to a dangerous crime to remain in custody without bond, updates the definition of dangerous crime, and takes effect upon Governor Ron DeSantis&#8217; signature.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation is named after\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtxl.com\/downtown-tallahassee\/new-details-in-the-deadly-child-abuse-investigation-of-melissa-missy-mogle\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Melissa &#8220;Missy&#8221; Mogle,<\/a>\u00a0a 5-year-old girl who was found unresponsive last May and later pronounced dead at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother and stepfather, Chloe and Daniel Spencer, were charged with her death.<\/p>\n<p>Both parents are facing first-degree murder charges. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtxl.com\/downtown-tallahassee\/new-trial-date-set-for-stepfather-accused-of-killing-5-year-old-stepdaughter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Spencer&#8217;s<\/a> trial is set to begin on June 22, 2026.
