The city of Port St. Lucie is 65 years old.Residents celebrated how much the city has grown over the years with a community block party that included live music and entertainment for the whole family.Port St. Lucie is now the sixth-largest city in Florida.Last year it was designated an All-American City, which means it has been honored by the National Civic League for civic engagement, innovation and collaboration to solve local problems.Port St. Lucie was incorporated in 1961 by a development group selling quarter-acre lots to retirees, without the usual city infrastructure like sidewalks, streetlights, or water and sewer systems. Over the past six decades, the community transformed those unlikely beginnings into a powerful success story.In the 1970 U.S. Census, the population was less than 1,000 people. The population has steadily increased with 51,000 in 1980, 152,000 in 1990, 273,000 in 2000, 379,000 in 2010, 521,000 in 2020 and more than 581,00 today.The city has been recognized as:\u00b7 The safest large city in Florida for more than a decade. \u00b7 One of only two cities in America to be considered fully racially integrated.\u00b7 One of the top real estate markets in the state and the nation.Port St. Lucie Mayor Shannon Martin told WPBF why she believes people are moving here.”So people are coming here because it’s safe and beautiful, because of the affordability factor and also because we’re a very unique community where like I said we engage our residents,” Martin said. “When our residents tell us that yes we have a lot of growth but we want to make sure you’re preserving green space and you’re taking care of the environment or making sure that we are doing exactly that.”Martin said the city is excited about the opening of the Stars & Stripes Park last year and BMX track later this year.The block party went from 5 to 8 p.m.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n
