Since arriving in Major League Soccer in July 2023, nobody has struck fear into the hearts of defenders quite like Lionel Messi.<\/p>\n
The eight-time Ballon d\u2019Or winner has scored at will every stop along the way and has the World Cup, Copa America, Champions League, and domestic trophies on both sides of the Atlantic, most recently the MLS Cup with Inter Miami.<\/p>\n
In four career games against the Revolution, Messi had scored seven times in four Inter Miami victories, by a combined score of 16-5.<\/p>\n
Saturday night at the new Nu Stadium in Miami, Matt Turner and the Revolution kept the legend off the scoresheet and pulled out a frantic 1-1 tie that stretches New England\u2019s unbeaten run in all competition to six games (4-0-2).<\/p>\n
Less than five minutes after Miami had a goal disallowed as Tadeo Allende was ruled offside, the Revolution struck first off a throw-in. Will Sands picked out Dor Turgeman inside the Inter Miami penalty box. The Israeli forward was tied up with a defender, but the ball was left for Carles Gil to charge in, take a touch, and chip Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair in the 56th minute for his second goal of the season.<\/p>\n
Inter Miami pressed forward for the equalizer and it came off a rebound in the 76th minute after Turner managed to go down to get his right hand on a Luis Su\u00e1rez shot, only to have it fall directly in the path of Germ\u00e1n Berterame, who had a step on Revolution midfielder Ethan Kohler.<\/p>\n
In the 78th minute, Luca Langoni sent Turgeman in one-on-one against St. Clair, only to be denied.<\/p>\n
Turner and the Revolution were mindful of Messi at all times, and handled chances from or created by the superstar. Turner easily handling a shot from above the box early in stoppage time and a header off a Messi feed shortly before the final whistle.<\/p>\n
After denying a great chance off the left foot of Su\u00e1rez in the eighth minute, Turner (9 saves) dove to his left to stop a Messi shot labeled for just inside the post in the 11th.<\/p>\n
The Revolution will play Orlando in the round of 16 of the US Open on Wednesday at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.<\/p>\n
