\u201cMoment in Time: A Legacy of Photographs\u201d from the Bank of America collection is now on display at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens.<\/p>\n
The exhibition features more than 100 works from Bank of America\u2019s corporate collection.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really generous of Bank of America to allow their corporate collection to be featured in museums around the world,\u201d said Holly Keris J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver\u2019s chief curator.<\/p>\n
This collection showcases the dawn of photography as art and its evolution through the mid-20th century.<\/p>\n
Before the 1920s, photography was seen more as a scientific endeavor than an art form, so this exhibition traces the history of photography as art. It highlights some of the artists who took the medium of photography from early ventures in artistic expression through the mid-20th century when people started to realize they could use photography to tell a story. The first museum collections of photography were not until the late 1940s.<\/p>\n
\u201cMoment in Time: A Legacy of Photographs\u201d features 115 works by key photographers from around the world including William Henry Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, Timothy O\u2019Sullivan, Paul Strand, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ansel Adams, Helen Levitt, Lewis Wickes Hine and Walker Evans. It spans the period from 1840 to around 1960.<\/p>\n
\u201cInvesting in arts and culture is one of the most meaningful ways we can strengthen the places we call home, making world-class artistic experiences more accessible and inclusive for everyone,\u201d said Mark Bennett, president, Bank of America Jacksonville.<\/p>\n
Before arriving in Jacksonville, this exhibition was previously shown at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, California; the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin; and the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati, Ohio. This exhibition has been loaned through the Bank of America Art in the Communities program.<\/p>\n
The Cummer Museum is also currently featuring \u201cArt in Bloom,\u201d a floral exhibition.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were looking for an opportunity to celebrate spring,\u201d said Keris.<\/p>\n
The museum chose a variety of contemporary artists for \u201cArt in Bloom\u201d who use different types of media. It features floral art made from recycled paper, fabric, ceramic, copper and metal.<\/p>\n
\u201cMoment in Time\u201d will run through Sept. 6 and \u201cArt in Bloom\u201d will run through Sept. 13.<\/p>\n
