Formerly known as Harney Point Road, its transformation from a desolate path into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/08\/sw-florida-traffic-news-cape-coral-bridge-to-be-demolished-replaced\/85559332007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:six\u2011lane highway;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">six\u2011lane highway<\/a> mirrors the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/cape-coral\/2026\/03\/31\/whats-the-latest-on-cape-corals-yacht-club-and-boathouse-restaurant-development-resort-seven-islands\/89377390007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:growth of Cape Coral;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">growth of Cape Coral<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The road\u2019s story stretches back to November 1957, when developers broke ground on what they marketed as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/cape-coral\/2017\/08\/30\/cape-coral-history-waterfront-wonderland-cynthia-williams-5-things-about\/603232001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:&quot;Waterfront Wonderland.&quot;;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">&#8220;Waterfront Wonderland.&#8221;<\/a> At the time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/cape-coral\/2019\/03\/20\/5-things-gulf-american-land-corp-s-headquarters-cape-coral-fit-king\/3196733002\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Gulf American Land Corporation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Gulf American Land Corporation<\/a> relied on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/cape-coral\/2017\/01\/11\/five-firsts-cape-coral-history-harney-point-yacht-club\/96349808\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Harney Point Road;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Harney Point Road<\/a> as the main route into the city. Salesmen routinely drove the dirt road each morning to &#8220;clear away dead snakes and other unsightly roadkill\u201d before showing lots to prospective buyers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/cape-coral\/2018\/11\/10\/5-things-cape-corals-del-prado-boulevard-had-bumpy-road-completion\/1880465002\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cynthia Williams wrote;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Cynthia Williams wrote<\/a> in The News-Press in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/2021\/02\/21\/cape-coral-city-council-gloria-raso-tate-named-fill-vacant-seat\/4498605001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Former Cape Coral Council Member Gloria Tate;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Former Cape Coral Council Member Gloria Tate<\/a> arrived in 1960 during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/weather\/hurricane\/2022\/09\/25\/hurricane-history-florida-donna-slammed-naples-fort-myers-1960-category-4-ian-gulf-of-mexico\/8113795001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hurricane Donna;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Hurricane Donna<\/a>, when Del Prado was still little more than a track through scrub. &#8220;It was a dirt road,&#8221; she recalled from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/cape-coral\/2019\/06\/30\/longtime-cape-coral-realtor-resident-gloria-raso-tate-hurricane-donna\/1559721001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:her arrival;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">her arrival<\/a>. &#8220;There was no one here. It was very desolate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That same year, the corridor was renamed Del Prado Boulevard, and Lee County quickly recognized its importance. What began as a rural connector soon became essential infrastructure, linking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/life\/2025\/07\/20\/archives-cape-coral-from-bedroom-community-to-swfls-largest-city\/84451246007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:fledgling city;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">fledgling city<\/a> to the rest of Southwest Florida. By 1965, Del Prado was already the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/news\/cape-coral-traffic-nightmare-whats-090051915.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:busiest road;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">busiest road<\/a> in Lee County, carrying roughly 5,000 vehicles a day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Originally, Del Prado was our connection to life, basically,&#8221; Tate said. &#8220;It is a commercial corridor. It was a bedroom community with nothing, and now we have so much to offer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Today, Del Prado continues to shape the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/cape-coral\/2026\/03\/24\/cape-coral-development-update-parks-walmart-housing\/89297657007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:city\u2019s future;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">city\u2019s future<\/a>, connecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/news\/local\/cape-coral\/2014\/07\/13\/cape-coral-plenty-history-pioneers-stories\/12568221\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:history;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">history<\/a> to new development.
