{"id":247320,"date":"2026-04-26T14:40:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T14:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/247320\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T14:40:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T14:40:09","slug":"mothers-against-drunk-driving-hold-annual-5k-in-downtown-fort-lauderdale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/247320\/","title":{"rendered":"Mothers Against Drunk Driving hold annual 5K in Downtown Fort Lauderdale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text text--small text--normal text--primary\">Published:\u00a0April 26, 2026 at 10:17 AM<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.  \u2014 The annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving 5K was held Sunday in Fort Lauderdale. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Hundreds of runners pounded the pavement for the MADD Dash 5K. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">They\u2019re on a mission to encourage drivers to make smarter decisions before getting behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Heather Geronemus established the event 15 years ago in honor of her father, who was killed by a drunk driver in Miami back in 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cEveryone has the power to end drunk driving,\u201d she said. \u201cJust have to plan ahead for a safe and sober ride home when your plans include alcohol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While the tragedy still weighs heavy, Geronemus pushed through, turning her pain into purpose. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMy father was crossing the street on foot after a medical conference dinner, and he was struck by a drunk driver, and he died in the middle of Brickell,\u201d she said. \u201cSo my dad, Dr. Robert Geronemus, a lifesaver, was killed in an instant by a person who made a terrible decision to drink all day and ultimately impacted my father and my family forever.
