\u201cOur family was devastated,\u201d said Emily, Montoto\u2019s sister. \u201cYou broke more than a law, you broke a family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Montoto\u2019s mother, Sajay Montoto, sat near the spot where her son\u2019s body landed as she spoke about the loss.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would do anything to change places with him,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was loved. I was really proud of him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Family members said Montoto had just celebrated his 24th birthday on Valentine\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n
Two days later, they say, he and his brother-in-law were traveling in a red tow truck that had the green light when another tow truck ran a red light and caused the crash.<\/p>\n
Montoto\u2019s brother-in-law remains hospitalized, his family told Local 10\u2019s Samiar Nefzi. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe was planning on proposing this year,\u201d said Yahily Calderin, Montoto\u2019s girlfriend. \u201cInstead of walking down an aisle, I had to walk into a funeral home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Calderin said she later found a love note Montoto had written and tattooed part of it on her forearm.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat doesn\u2019t it mean to me?\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s the last \u2018I love you\u2019 I got from him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Montoto\u2019s mother said she has been seeking justice since the crash.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe day he died, I died with him,\u201d she said. \u201cSeeing my son on the floor \u2014 and today, I\u2019m trying to do everything to get him justice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Family and friends held signs reading \u201cJustice for Albert\u201d and called on Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle to file charges against the driver they say caused the crash.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt wasn\u2019t an accident. It was a decision a person made,\u201d said family friend Arasay Acosta.<\/p>\n
Relatives said the driver has only received a traffic citation so far, which they argue is not enough.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think a ticket is enough,\u201d a family member said. \u201cIf I were to run a red light right now and hit someone, don\u2019t I get arrested?\u201d<\/p>\n
Messages including \u201cThis is my son\u2019s blood \u2014 where is my justice?\u201d and \u201cA red light is not an accident\u201d were displayed on a fence near the crash site, which is now marked by teddy bears, flowers and posters.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy son was loved. He was a good kid,\u201d Sajay Montoto said. \u201cEvery room he entered, it was like the sun was coming in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily, Montoto\u2019s younger sister, said they were especially close.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe knew I loved him with everything in me,\u201d she said. \u201cWe did everything together \u2014 our whole 20s.\u201d<\/p>\n
The family is also calling for stricter laws for drivers with multiple traffic violations.<\/p>\n
The Miami-Dade State Attorney\u2019s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n
