A new traffic signal at the intersection of\u00a0Thomasville\u00a0Road and Velda Dairy Road\u00a0was activated\u00a0on Tuesday,\u00a0Feb.\u00a024,\u00a0marking a major change for drivers in northeast Tallahassee as development continues to expand in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The project, backed by the Florida Department of Transportation, is intended to improve safety and manage increasing traffic along one of the city\u2019s busiest corridors. Officials say the signal will help regulate vehicle flow and reduce dangerous driving behaviors that have become common in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For many residents and nearby community members, the change cannot come soon enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTraffic jams\u00a0\u2026 every morning you come here, we have either the Tallahassee Police Department or the sheriff\u2019s department in our parking lot monitoring the traffic,\u201d said Rose Carney, a local community member.\u00a0\u201cThey don\u2019t follow the regular speed limit and take the road as a speedway.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Carney described\u00a0Thomasville\u00a0Road as increasingly dangerous, especially during peak commute hours when drivers travel between Tallahassee and Georgia.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a constant flow with people coming in from Georgia and going out to Georgia to work,\u201d Carney said. \u201cTrying to get out to go to work is a nightmare because they don\u2019t slow down or let you out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ann Caulfield, another community member, said the high traffic volume has made\u00a0routine\u00a0activities unsafe, particularly for older residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot turn into the church entrance here because traffic is so heavy,\u201d Caulfield said. \u201cIf we slow down, that means they\u2019re going to hit us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Carney\u00a0added that the lack of stopping points along the corridor has contributed to speeding.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re coming from\u00a0Maclay, and there\u2019s not another stop sign until you get to Walmart,\u201d\u00a0Carney\u00a0said. \u201cSo hopefully it will impact this road, and they won\u2019t be able to speed like they used to.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The installation of the new signal is expected to introduce a controlled stopping point and improve conditions for drivers entering and exiting nearby properties.\u00a0<\/p>\n
However, not all residents are convinced the new traffic light will solve the problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n
One nearby resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said she and her neighbors are frustrated with how the project was handled.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not happy about it,\u201d\u00a0an\u00a0anonymous\u00a0Tallahassee resident\u00a0said. \u201cWe feel like our concerns\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0really listened to before construction started. The developers should have worked with the people who\u00a0live\u00a0here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Transportation officials say they will continue\u00a0monitoring\u00a0traffic patterns after the signal is activated and\u00a0adjust\u00a0if necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n
