{"id":250280,"date":"2026-04-28T22:30:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T22:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/250280\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T22:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T22:30:08","slug":"local-first-responders-train-for-active-shooter-scenarios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/250280\/","title":{"rendered":"Local first responders train for active shooter scenarios"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FORT PIERCE, Fla. \u2014 Law enforcement and first responders on the Treasure Coast are completing intense and realistic active shooting training in Fort Pierce at Indian River State College.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we&#8217;re trying to create is a simulation of that sensory overload,\u201d said instructor Logan Lane.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH: &#8216;The scenario environment is going to be utter chaos,&#8217; says instructor <\/p>\n<p>Local officers train for active shooter response in Fort Pierce<\/p>\n<p>The program is led by the Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education at the University Of Miami.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s situations that we&#8217;re seeing more often,\u201d said Barry Issenberg, director of the Gordon Center. <\/p>\n<p>Issenberg said this training is unique because it allows law enforcement and EMS to go into these hostile situations together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis course really teaches these different teams to work together in a coordinated fashion so they can respond faster,\u201d said Issenberg.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same training, Issenberg said, first responders in Tallahassee went through prior to the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wptv.com\/news\/state\/we-were-all-shaking-marjorie-stoneman-douglas-graduate-describes-surviving-fsu-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Florida State University shooting<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>Instructor Logan Lane said law enforcement and EMS first listen to a lecture in the morning and then work together at stations, performing wound care, triaging, and rescuing victims from the scene. <\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, they head into the simulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scenario environment is going to be utter chaos,&#8221; said Lane. &#8220;They&#8217;re learning how to play off of each other&#8217;s actions to then get to the response of helping and saving somebody&#8217;s life.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>James Hall, a school resource officer with the Stuart Police Department, was at the training on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wptv.com\/news\/treasure-coast\/region-martin-county\/martin-county-sheriffs-office-responds-to-call-at-jensen-beach-high-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jensen Beach High School<\/a> in Martin County had a false alarm threat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Resources like this help me train better,\u201d said Hall. &#8220;I can do what I do.
