Junior Caminero left Tuesday’s game after a foul ball bounced up and struck him in the face. The Tampa Bay Rays star’s status is TBD.

Junior Caminero suffered a frightening injury scare Tuesday night, and Tampa Bay Rays fans are holding their breath waiting for updates. The 22-year-old slugger was struck directly in the face by a foul ball during the Rays’ game against the Cleveland Guardians — and it happened just two batters into the contest in the top of the first inning.

Rays’ Junior Caminero Injured on Tuesday April 28

It was a freak play from the start. Caminero fouled a ball into the ground, which then bounced straight up and struck him in the face, according to 10 Tampa Bay Sports director and reporter Evan Closky, who first reported the incident on X.

Closky initially reported that Caminero was staying in the game following the scary moment. He later followed up to report that Caminero had left the contest. The full severity of the Junior Caminero injury remains to be determined, and more updates are expected to emerge as the night progresses.

Junior Caminero’s 2026 Season With Tampa Bay

Any absence for Caminero would be a massive blow to a Tampa Bay Rays team that has been one of the best stories in baseball so far this season. The Rays entered Tuesday’s game at 17-11 overall — an electric start that has the organization buzzing with genuine playoff momentum.

Caminero has been right in the middle of that surge. Through his first games of 2026, he has posted eight home runs, 15 RBIs, and a .500 slugging percentage. He is picking up right where he left off from one of the most impressive breakout campaigns in recent memory.

Last season, Caminero announced himself to the baseball world in a big way — slashing his way to 45 home runs, 110 RBIs, and a .535 slugging percentage. Those are superstar numbers at any age. At just 22 years old, Caminero has become the elite offensive cornerstone the Tampa Bay Rays have been searching for across many years.

Losing him for any significant stretch would fundamentally change the complexion of Tampa Bay’s season. The Rays have built their early success around pitching and efficiency, but Caminero’s bat provides the kind of middle-of-the-order thump that is nearly impossible to replace — especially from within an organization that has historically operated on a tight budget.

Updates on the Junior Caminero injury situation are expected to continue coming out of Tampa Bay’s medical staff as the night goes on.

Justin Carlucci brings 13+ years of journalism experience to Heavy.
