As part of its recent The Sanibel Community Safety Update, the Sanibel Police Department (SPD) shared the following information:<\/p>\n

Protecting the safety and quality of life in our community is a shared responsibility built on a strong partnership between the public and its police department. The Sanibel Police Department remains firmly committed to preserving the character and safety of our island through collaboration, transparency and consistent engagement.<\/p>\n

To reinforce this commitment, the department launched \u201cSlow Down Sanibel,\u201d an initiative that combines fair and consistent traffic enforcement with education and community outreach. The program underscores that roadway safety is not solely an enforcement function, but a shared civic responsibility among those who live, work and visit Sanibel.<\/p>\n

Sanibel\u2019s roadways are uniquely shared by motorists, pedestrians and cyclists in a community that values walkability and accessibility. Roadways must not only prevent crashes and protect life but also function in a safe and predictable manner for all users. Through \u201cSlow Down Sanibel,\u201d the department applies a data-informed enforcement strategy guided by community feedback, internal speed studies, documented traffic patterns and officer observations. This measured approach ensures enforcement efforts remain fair, transparent and responsive to local conditions.<\/p>\n

Public education is also central to the initiative. Residents and visitors will continue to see traffic safety messaging through official city communication platforms, along with rotating speed notification trailers in areas where concerns have been raised. By clearly communicating enforcement priorities and reinforcing safe driving practices, the department seeks to encourage voluntary compliance and strengthen public trust.<\/p>\n

Seasonal increases in traffic further highlight the need for thoughtful and patient driving. Allowing a few extra minutes for travel, recognizing that speeding saves little time and exercising courtesy, especially toward drivers unfamiliar with the island, can significantly reduce crashes and roadway conflicts.<\/p>\n

FOCUSED TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT<\/p>\n

During the second half of 2025, the department expanded its proactive traffic safety efforts by assigning two officers exclusively to traffic and DUI enforcement. Their schedules align with periods of higher traffic volume and increased potential for impaired driving. Concentrating resources during these higher-risk times enhances visibility, supports deterrence and ensures practical, deliberate enforcement. Their focused efforts have contributed positively to maintaining safe and orderly travel conditions across the island.<\/p>\n

TRAFFIC SAFETY EFFORTS IN 2025<\/p>\n

In 2025, officers demonstrated continued commitment to roadway safety by:<\/p>\n

\u2013 Conducting 3,877 traffic stops<\/p>\n

\u2013 Performing 3,755 radar enforcement assignments<\/p>\n

\u2013 Issuing 1,319 traffic citations<\/p>\n

\u2013 Issuing 144 traffic-related notices to appear<\/p>\n

\u2013 Investigating 131 traffic crashes<\/p>\n

\u2013 Making 39 DUI arrests<\/p>\n

\u2013 Issuing 1,518 automated speed enforcement warnings and citations<\/p>\n

These efforts reflect the department\u2019s sustained focus on promoting safe driving and addressing community traffic concerns.<\/p>\n

As we move forward together, we thank residents and visitors for their cooperation and encourage everyone to remember the guiding message of this initiative: \u201cSlow Down Sanibel.\u201d<\/p>\n
